AMLA BOOSTS IMMUNE SYSTEM

Vitamin C is an essential ingredient for human beings. It is required for the synthesis of inter-cellular cement "collagen", which is responsible for keeping various cells of the human body together. As an oxidant, it acts like a cop in the body, apprehending the rowdy molecules called free radicals that are naturally formed during various chemical reactions in the body and have the potential to damage. Vitamin C is also required for dentin formation in the teeth and it also aids in the absorption of iron from the body

AMLA REDUCES SERUM CHOLESTEROL LEVELS

A study conducted at the Department of Foods & Nutrition, Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi, New Delhi, India has demonstrated that the Indian Gooseberry (Amla -Emblica officinalis, Gaertn.) can reduce high serum cholesterol levels. The effect on total serum cholesterol and its lipo-protein fractions of supplementation of the diet with the Indian gooseberry was studied in normal and hypercholesterolaemic men aged 35-55 years

Medicinal Properties of Amla Juice

Amla , one of the three constituents of the group triphala (three fruits, others being haritaki vibhitaki), is an important rasayana drug, capable of imparting youthful vigour and strength to the consumer and hence the synonyms vayastha and amrta. As a very important source of vitamin C, this is one of the major ingredients of the famous tonic Cyavanaprasam and can also help improve intelligence and memory power.
Amla fruit has been held in high esteem in indigenous medicine. It is acrid, cooling, refrigerant, diuretic, alexeteric, antipyretic, aphrodisiac alterant, tonic and trichogeneous. The raw fruit is eaten as an aperient. Dried fruit is useful in haemorrhage, diarrhoea and dysentery. In combination with iron, it is used as a remedy for anaemia, jaundice and dyspepsia. A fermented liquor prepared from the fruit is used in jaundice, dyspepsia and cough. Emblic myrobalan is used in many compound preparations. Acute bacillary dysentery may be arrested by drinking a sherbet of Amla with lemon juice. Triphala, consisting of equal parts of powdered emblic myrobalan, chebulic myrobalan (Terminalia chebula Retz.) and belleric myrobalan (T.bellerica Roxb.) is used as a laxative and in headache, biliousness, dyspepsia, constipation, piles, enlarged liver and ascites. The exudation from incisions on the fruit is used as an external application for inflammation of the eye. The flowers are cooling, refrigerant and aperient. The root and bark are astringent (Kirt. & Basu, III, 2220; Nadkarni, 1914, 151; Koman, 1918, 6; Indian For., 1949, 75, 243).

Amla fruits are anabolic, anti-bacterial and resistance building. They possess expectorant, cardiotonic, antioxidative, antiviral and anti-emetic activities. The dried fruit extract is non-toxic and inhibits emesis induced by apomorphine. Fruit is used in the treatment of leucorrhoea and atherosclerosis. Its decoction is used in hyperacidity and with honey as an anthelmintic. The total extracts of the dried fruits of Momordica charantia, Amla and rhizomes of Curcuma longashow antibacterial and hypoglycaemic activity. Extracts of fruits inhibited the production of Aflatoxin B1 and B2by >50%. The fruits are also used to purify low turbidity water and can be used as a coagulant in the treatment of water [Int J Pharmacogn,1992, 30, 145;ibid, 1991, 39, 117; Ancient Sci Life, 1989, 9(1),31; Indian Drugs,1989, 26(10), 526; J Res Ayur Siddha, 1990, 11(1-4), 78; J Res Edu Ind Med,1991, 10(2), 1;Indian J Pharma Sci,1993, 55(1), 6; Indian Med,1992, 4(2), 11; Pakist J Sci Ind Res,1990, 33, 268;

Cytoprotective activity of Amla (Emblica officinalis) against chromium (VI) induced oxidative injury in murine macrophages. Phytother Res. 2003 Apr;17(4):430-3.
The cytoprotective and immunomodulating properties of Amla against chromium (VI) induced oxidative damage are reported. Chromium (VI) at 1 micro g/mL concentration was highly cytotoxic. It enhanced free radical production and decreased reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in macrophages. The presence of Amla Saar resulted in an enhanced cell survival, decreased free radical production and higher antioxidant levels similar to that of control cells. Further, chromium (VI) treatment resulted in decreased phagocytosis and gamma-interferon (gamma-IFN) production while Amla inhibited chromium induced immunosuppression and restored both phagocytosis and gamma-IFN production by macrophages significantly.

AMLA REDUCES UNWANTED FAT

Amla reduces unwanted fat because it increases total protein levels; this is due to its ability to create a positive nitrogen balance and it also significantly reduces the levels of free fatty acids. In addition, Amla, in a raw or natural form, reduces cholesterol and cholesterol induced atherosclerosis (Obstruction of the arteries), making it a useful natural product to fight obesity. One study shows that it prevented atheroma (degeneration of the artery walls due to fat and scar tissue). Furthermore, Amla has exhibited considerable effect in inhibiting the HIV virus  which ultimately results in the disease AIDS.

AMLA- NATURE'S MOST POWERFUL HERB AGAINST CANCER

Chinese researchers have discovered that Amla fruit is a rich source of therapeutic chemicals, including quercetin (which is also found in apples), gallic and ellagic acids (found in green tea), and other less well-known ones such as chebulinic acid, chebulagic acid, corilagin, and isostrictiniin (Zhongguo Zhong Yao Za Zhi. 2003 Oct;28(10):940-3).
All of these chemicals are powerful antioxidants, which help protect you from harmful free radicals that can increase the risk of a wide range of serious diseases including cancer. This is backed-up by preliminary research findings, which suggest that Amla may play an important role in the fight against cancer.

AMLA REMOVES TOXIC BUILD UP OF HEAVY METALS

Several animal studies have shown that Amla can help prevent a toxic build-up of heavy metals – caused by frequent exposure to metals like aluminium, lead and nickel. When vitamin C alone was used – equivalent to that found in Amla fruit – only partial protection from heavy metals was provided.
However, when the whole Amla fruit was used almost complete protection was achieved. This indicates that it is the combined action of the various ingredients found in the fruit that effectively helps shield DNA from heavy metal poisoning (Dhir, H.A. Agarwal; A. Sharma, and G. Talukder. Cancer Letters 59.9 18, 1991; Giri, A.K. Cytologia 51, pp 375-380, 1986).

Properties of Amla - According to Ayurveda

Rasa (taste): sour, astringent are dominant, but fruit has five tastes, including sweet, bitter, and pungent
Veerya (nature): cooling
Vipaka (taste developed through digestion): sweet
Guna (qualities): light, dry
Doshas (effect on humors): pacifies all three doshas: vata, kapha, pitta, especially effective for pitta
Antacid: Clinical studies were conducted to investigate the effect of Emblica officinalis in Amla-pitta (gastritis syndrome). The drug was found to be effective in 85 per cent of cases.
Cases of hyperchlorhydria with burning sensation in abdominal and cardiac regions and epigastric pain were also benefited with Emblica officinalis.
Dyspepsia: The therapeutic efficacy of Amla in cases of dyspepsia was evaluated and the results clearly indicate the efficacy of Emblica officinalis, in relieving the dyspeptic symptoms as well as in promoting ulcer healing.
Anti-inflammatory: Anti-inflammatory activity was found in the water fraction of methanol extract of the plant of Emblica officinalis leaves.

Need for Vitamin C - Nature's greatest Anti-oxidant

Vitamin C is an essential ingredient for human beings. It is required for the synthesis of inter-cellular cement "collagen", which is responsible for keeping various cells of the human body together. As an oxidant, it acts like a cop in the body, apprehending the rowdy molecules called free radicals that are naturally formed during various chemical reactions in the body and have the potential to damage. Vitamin C is also required for dentin formation in the teeth and it also aids in the absorption of iron from the body.
Rats have the capacity to synthesise vitamin C with their body whereas human beings are required to provide it through diet. The richest source of vitamin C is Amla (Emblica officinalis). The secondary source is lemon, lime, oranges, papaya, pineapple, cabbage, cauliflower, green peas and tomatoes.
Scurvy is the disease caused by the deficiency of this vitamin. In its shortfall, gums are swollen or bleeding, wounds are weak and readily fractured, haemorrhages, delayed wound healing and poor teeth formation in children. A balanced diet with vitamin C is the requirement to avoid scurvy. Pregnant or lactating mothers and in a stressed and traumatic patient, vitamin C is the remedy.
Each adult is required to consume 75 mg per day; an infant 30 mg per day; a pregnant woman 100 mg per day; a lactating mother 150 mg per day. Doctors use vitamin C for the treatment of infections, healing of ulcers, burns and trauma, quick healing of fractures, etc. Therefore, vitamin C in the form of Amla Juice is best for human health.
