Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease in which the lining of the colon and rectum become inflamed. This inflammation leads to ulcers in the lining of the large intestine (colon). It is known as an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Usually this disease begins in the rectum and then spread upwards and rarely affects the portion below small intestine.

Cause of ulcerative colitis

The exact cause of this disease is not known, but there are some factors which contribute to this disease. These factors include food allergies, autoimmune factors, collagen disorders, infection and genetic factors. The psychological factors such as anger, anxiety and depression may also contribute to this disease.

Symptoms of ulcerative colitis

The symptoms of ulcerative colitis are listed below:

  • Pain in abdomen.
  • Bloody stools.
  • Increase in abdominal sounds.
  • Diarrhea, nausea, fever, weight loss.
  • Malnutrition.
  • Rectal pain.
  • Pain and swelling in joints may occur.

Types of ulcerative colitis

There are 5 different types of ulcerative colitis depending upon the location which are explained below:

Ulcerative proctitis:

It is the inflammation which is limited to the rectum. Rectal bleeding may occur.


It refers to the inflammation of the rectum and sigmoid colon.

Left-sided colitis:

It refers to the inflammation which starts at the rectum and extends up to the left of the colon. Pain in left sided colon and weight loss are some of the symptoms of this colitis.


It is also known as universal colitis. It involves the inflammation of the entire colon.

Fulminant colitis:

This type of colitis is a severe form of pancolitis and is rare.

Complications of ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis increases the risk of developing colon cancer. It may lead to thickening of the intestinal walls, sepsis (blood infection), dehydration, kidney stones, ankylosing spondylitis, toxic megacolon (rapid swelling in the colon) and a hole in the colon.

How can ulcerative colitis be diagnosed?

There are some tests which can be used to diagnose ulcerative colitis. These tests include stool test, blood test, endoscopy, colonoscopy, biopsy and x-rays of the colon and rectum using barium.
