Ayurveda and Paget's disease
Ayurveda is an oldest system of healthcare that helps maintain overall health of the body. The word Ayurveda is made up of two words "Ayu" and "Veda". "Ayu" means life and "Veda" means knowledge or science. So Ayurveda means Science of life.
According to Ayurveda, there are three doshas of the body and they are Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha. Imbalance in any dosha of the body results in unhealthy functioning of the body. Paget's disease is due to imabalance in Vata dosha.
Paget's disease is the most common disease of the bones. It is an abnormal bone growth in which the bone tissue breaks down too fast and body speeds up the rebuilding process. The new bone formed is often weak and brittle. The Paget's disease is also known as Osteitis deformans.
What is the cause of Paget's disease?
The exact cause of the Paget's disease is not known but it is thought to be caused by the virus particle known as Paramyxovirus nucleocapsid. This virus particle is not found in normal bone but it has been identified within the bone cells of person with this type of disease.
What are the different types of Paget's disease?
Depending on whether the bone formation process goes quickly or normally, Paget's disease can be classified as Active or Inactive Paget's disease.
1. Active Paget's disease:
This type of Paget's disease has three stages:
- Hot lytic stage - This is the starting stage of this disease which occurs when bone tissue is being quickly broken down. Bones are painful during this stage.
- Mixed stage - This stage occurs when bone tissue is being quickly broken down and quickly rebuilt as well.
- Cold (rebuilding stage) - This stage occurs when bone tissue is being quickly rebuilt.
2. Inactive Paget's disease:
It is a type of Paget's disease in which bone tissue is being broken down and rebuilt at a normal speed. This type of Paget's disease mostly occurs when you are taking medicines to slow down the bone growth.
What are the complications of Paget's disease?
Paget's disease can cause following complications:
- Nerve problems such as hearing loss, headache, vision problems, dizziness, trouble in keeping balance.
Other complications of Paget's disease are: Heart failure, blood cancer, kidney stones and hyperparathyroidism. These complications are rare.
What is the effect of Paget's disease on entire skeleton?
Paget's disease does not affect the entire skeleton. It may occur in one bone or in several bones. It can occur in any bone but it is common in pelvis, skull, spine and leg bones. The disease does not spread from one bone to another.
What is a bone scan test?
Bone scan is a test that is done to find the damage to the bones. A Radioactive substance, called tracer, is injected into a vein in an arm during this scan test. This tracer then travels through the bloodstream and into the bones. A special camera then takes pictures of this tracer. Areas that absorb less or no amount of tracer appear as dark spots while the areas of bright spots denote the areas of fast bone growth. These bright or hot spots may indicate arthritis, fracture or an infection.
What is the effect of exercise and diet on people with Paget's disease?
Regular exercise is good for overall health of the body. Exercise is important for people with Paget's disease to maintain healthy bones as well as to avoid weight gain. Exercise helps to maintain mobility of joints. Calcium and vitamin D is important for people with Paget's disease as calcium keeps bones strong. Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium by the body.
