There are two masses of tissues at the back of the throat that act as filters. The main function of these filters is to trap the germs that enters the airways and can cause infection. The other function is to produce antibodies that fight with the infection. Sometimes due to bacteria or viruses, tonsils become infected and they get inflamed and swollen which results into tonsillitis.
