RANDOM BLOOD SUGAR LEVEL TEST
It is a blood test conducted randomly at any time to detect blood glucose levels in that person. It is a criteria to determine the efficiency with which the body is managing glucose metabolism.
It is used as a primary screening test to detect Diabetes.
The ideal range of normal blood sugar in this test is 70 – 125 mg/dl.
Management of blood glucose in the body
Insulin hormone secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas is primarily responsible for the management of blood sugar levels at all ages in human beings.
The food we eat is metabolized in our body into fine sugar molecules which are utilized by the body cells to generate energy. Insulin hormone has the responsibility to allow for effective uptake of glucose by each and every cell of the body.
When this process is disrupted for example in case of Type – 2 Diabetes, the blood glucose level rises and leads to Diabetes.
With a random blood glucose test we can conclude how effectively is the insulin hormone utilizing the blood sugar made available through the food we eat.
In patients with Diabetes or Pre Diabetes, blood sugar levels widely vary and the test results are consistently raised.
Effect of raised blood sugar levels on the body
- Weight loss
- Increased urination
- Slow healing
- Blurred vision
Random blood glucose test may not always give you accurate results as it may occasionally get affected by a heavy meals which is high on sugar which you may have consumed a few hours back. Although in normal conditions, the blood glucose levels do not over shoot beyond a safe limit thanks to the insulin hormone. It is only when the insulin is not working properly that blood sugar levels rise abnormally.
Importance of exercise in controlling Diabetes
Exercise helps to lower blood sugar levels naturally and therefore, aids in maintaining a healthy blood glucose levels in Diabetics. Even the ones who are on insulin therapy need to readjust their insulin dosage as the blood sugar levels fall with regular exercise.
Exercising also aids in the normal and efficient working of the insulin hormone. Random blood glucose tests in Diabetics who exercise on a regular basis are found to be more stable as compared to others.
Other blood glucose tests
Random blood glucose test is not an accurate test if you are a chronic diabetic having severe blood sugar fluctuations. In such cases many other tests are conducted to assess the overall health of the pancreas and how well the body is managing the blood glucose concentration.
A few of the commonly conducted blood tests are:
Fasting blood glucose levels
It is conducted on an empty stomach early morning to detect the blood glucose levels accurately. The normal range of fasting blood glucose levels is <100 mg/ dl.
If it falls in the range of 100 – 125 mg/ dl it is known as Pre - Diabetes.
If it is above 125 mg/ dl on two consequent test reports then the patient is Diabetic for sure.
Oral Glucose tolerance test (OGTT)
The patient is kept fasting overnight and tested for blood sugar next morning. Then the patient is given a sugary liquid and subsequent readings for blood sugar are taken over a period of few hours.
A blood sugar level of < 140 mg/ dl is considered normal and >200 mg/ dl means the patient has Diabetes. In between these values the patient is in the Pre Diabetes stage.
Glycated Hemoglobin test (Hb A1C)
This test is conducted to know the average blood sugar in a person over the last few months. It measures the percentage of blood sugar that is attached to Hemoglobin. The higher the blood sugar the more the percentage of sugar attached to the Hemoglobin protein present in blood.
An HbA1C of 6.5 % and above is found in Diabetes. In case of Pre – Diabetes, this level is 5.7% to 6.4 % while a level below 5.7 % is considered to be normal.
In case of gestational Diabetes (Diabetes that develops at any time during Pregnancy), a few specialized tests are also conducted to assess blood glucose levels in pregnant would be mothers. These are, Initial glucose challenge test, Follow –up Glucose tolerance testing.
