URTICARIA

Urticaria is a common skin disorder which is characterized by formation of weals on the skin. Urticaria is commonly known as hives. It affects about 20 percent of people.

Mast cell is the central cause of urticaria. The chemical histamine is secreted by this mast cell when it is activated by any foreign factor such as bacteria, virus, drug or food. In some people, more number of mast cells are present, while in some people, more amount of histamine is secreted. The histamine dilates the blood vessels which in turn causes the swellings in the affected areas.

Symptoms of urticaria

Hives can appear on any area of the body and may change shape. They may disappear and reappear over short period of time.

The symptoms of urticaria are listed below:

  • Red or skin colored raised itchy bumps on the affected area.
  • Blanching (Center of red hive when pressed turns white).
  • Stinging sensation.

Causes of urticaria

Food allergies, stress, allergies to bug bites, contact with plants or animals, certain medications, cold, heat and overexposure to the sun are some of the common causes of urticaria. Some of the foods that cause urticaria are chocolate, fish, eggs, nuts and tomatoes.

Urticaria in Ayurveda

Ayurveda is one of the natural and an oldest system of healthcare which helps balancing all the three doshas of the body in a natural way and hence helps maintain overall health of the body.

Urticaria is known as "Sheetapitta", in Ayurveda. Sheetapitta is a condition which is caused due to vitiation of all the three doshas Vata, pitta and kapha dosha. It is mainly due to predominance of Vata dosha.

The word sheetapitta is derived from the combination of two words sheeta and pitta. The word sheeta means cold while the word pitta means warm. So sheetapitta is a condition which is caused due to the dominance of cold (that exist in vata and kapha dosha) over pitta dosha.
