WHAT ARE BILBERRY?

Bilberry is known by many other names such as Blueberry, Huckleberry, Whortleberry, Wine berry, Whinberry etc.

Blueberry plant is perennial in nature and grows to a height of 1 – 1.5 feet. The plant bears pink and solitary flowers with a pitcher shaped corolla.

The fruits occur in the form of black colored juicy berries which may contain up to 5 seeds.

Blueberry fruit is rich in "anthocyanoides" which are the main component of these fruits. Besides this, blueberry fruits are also rich in tannins.

WHAT ARE ANTHOCYANINS?

Anthocyanins are blue, red or purple colored pigments which belong to a famous class of molecules known as "Flavonoids".

These pigments are astringent in nature and found in many plant tissues such as leaves, stem, roots, fruits etc.

Anthocyanins impart beautiful coloration to the plant tissues and also act as plant protectors against the harmful sun radiations.

These pigments are known to exhibit strong antioxidant properties as well. Many fresh vegetables and fruits are said to be rich in antioxidants.

OTHER NATURAL FRUITS AND VEGETABLES CONTAINING ANTHOCYANINS

Other sources of anthocyanin pigment include cranberry, blue raspberry, red raspberry, black currant, eggplant, red cabbage, concord grapes etc.

Lesser abundant sources of anthocyanins include, Banana, Asparagus, Pea, Fennel, pear and potato.

Antioxidants are substances that provide natural protection to the body against deadly diseases like cancer, heart problems and regular wear and tear in general.
