Concept of Atopic Dermatitis in Ayurveda

Introduction

In ayurveda dermatitis or eczema is termed as Vicharchika. It is believed that vitiation of all the three doshas vata, pitta and kapha causes atopic dermatitis. The pitta vitiated vicharchika is the most common vitiation of skin.

In ayurveda, vitiation of all three doshas can cause dermatitis

1. Kapha Dosha

Imbalance of kapha is more distinct on the skin. The skin appears thick with itching and oozing.

2. Pitta Dosha

It may cause bleeding from affected area along with burning sensation and fever.

3. Vata Dosha

It causes the dermatitis due to dryness of skin. It is leads to severe itching and pain.

Atopic dermatitis is caused by imbalanced vata which makes the skin patchy, rough, dry, inflamed, itchy and scaly. Ayurvedic treatments depends on age, physical, mental, emotional, social and environmental constitution of an individual. Ayurveda involves the process of blood purification like snehan therapy, swedana therapy, panchkarma therapy to correct imbalanced doshas by diet and natural herbs and panchkarma blood purification process which involves vaman, virechan, nasya, basti and raktamokshan.

1. Almond Oil and Walnut Oil

Sweet almond oil is very popular carrier oil as it is absolutely light and easily available. Almond oil is generally cold pressed but most of the almond oil available is extracted using solvents. Almond oil is a great emollient which nourishes and rejuvenates dry skin. It is beneficial in treating the itching caused by dermatitis. The walnut oil is brown coloured oil which is most often used in hair care and skin care products and being an excellent emollient it is very effective in treating dermatitis.

2. Neem

Neem helps in blood purification and detoxification. Stem, root and bark of neem has astringent tonics which contains fatty acids that quickens wound healing, maintains skin elasticity and builds collagen. 5. Turmeric

The prime ingredient in turmeric is curcumin which contains anti-inflammatory and bactericidal properties and hence it may help to care skin inflammation related with dermatitis.
