HEARTBURN

Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest. This pain in the chest may radiate to the throat, neck, or angle of the jaw. It is an irritation of the esophagus, which is caused by acid in the stomach. Heartburn which occurs frequently and interferes with our daily routine is considered as GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Symptoms of heartburn

  • Burning feeling in the chest occurs after taking meals and this feeling lasts a few minutes to several hours.
  • Difficulty in swallowing.
  • Feeling of food sticking in the chest or throat.
  • Pain in the chest, especially after bending over or eating.
  • Burning feeling in the throat.

Cause of heartburn

It occurs when the acid in the stomach backs up into the tube which carries food from our mouth to our stomach.

In general, when we swallow, lower esophageal sphincter muscle relaxes and allow the food and liquid to flow down into the stomach. Then after, this muscle tightens again. If this lower esophageal sphincter muscle relaxes abnormally, then the acid in the stomach can flow back up into our esophagus and causes heartburn. And this acid backup may get worse when we are bent over or lying down.

Foods that cause heartburn triggers

There are some foods that cause heartburn to flare up and these foods are called as heartburn triggers. These foods include citrus fruits, spicy foods, chocolate, onions, garlic, fatty foods, black pepper, tomatoes, vinegar, caffeinated beverages, peppermints and alcoholic beverages.

Ayurvedic approach to Heartburn

Ayurveda is an ancient healthcare system. There are three doshas of the body which are known as tridoshas. These three doshas are Vata dosha, Pitta dosha and Kapha dosha. According to Ayurveda, any imbalance in any of these tridoshas leads to one or the other health conditions. These doshas are considered as the energies of our body.

According to Ayurveda, Heartburn is caused by the aggravation of Pitta dosha of the body. Acid starts climbing the esophagus, when Kapha dosha is associated with this aggravated pitta dosha. So if a person is suffering from heartburn, then he should avoid Pitta aggravating foods.
