Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which blood glucose or blood sugar levels are too high. Diabetes is also known as diabetes mellitus. The word diabetes comes from the Greek and it means "siphon". Diabetes can damage our eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Diabetes can also cause several other disease such as heart disease, stroke and even the need to remove a limb and chronic kidney disease. It is a lifelong disease.


Types of diabetes

There are three types of diabetes which are listed below:

1. Type 1 diabetes

In this type of diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Approximately 10 percent of all the cases of diabetes are type 1 diabetes. This type of diabetes is also known as juvenile diabetes or early onset diabetes. Patients with this diabetes will need to take insulin injections for the rest of their life.

2. Type 2 diabetes

In this type of diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin, or the cells in the body do not react to insulin (insulin resistance). Approximately 90 percent of all the cases of diabetes are type 1 diabetes. The symptoms of this type of diabetes can be controlled by losing weight and by doing plenty of exercise.

3. Gestational diabetes

This type of diabetes affects females during pregnancy. Some women have very high blood glucose levels and their bodies are unable to produce enough insulin to transport all of the glucose into their cells. It results in an increase in the levels of glucose in the blood. Uncontrolled gestational diabetes can lead to the risk of complications during birth of the child.

What is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar level is higher than the normal but not as high to be called diabetes. The Prediabetic patients are at higher risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Why diabetes is called as Diabetes mellitus?

The word diabetes means siphon. The word mellitus is derived from the latin word "Mel" which means "honey". The urine and blood of people with diabetes has excess glucose in it and glucose as sweet as honey. So Diabetes mellitus means "siphoning off sweet water". This disease is also known as sweet urine disease.

What is the cause of diabetes?

The factors that increases the chance of diabetes are:

  • Being Overweight.
  • Age (chances increase with age).
  • If there is any Family history of diabetes.
  • Being pregnant may also leads to gestational diabetes.
  • Certain medications may increase the chance of diabetes.

What are the symptoms of Diabetes?

  • Increased thirst
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Need to urinate often
  • Weak tired feeling
  • Slow healing of sores or cuts are some of the symptoms of diabetes

Is there any cure for diabetes?

No, diabetes cannot be cured but it can be maintained and controlled. Most of the people manage their disease by following daily healthy routine such as doing exercises, following healthy diet, and by taking medications or insulin injections. Without proper care diabetes can leads to several other disease.

What should be the blood glucose level for a healthy person?

Blood sugar ranges may be different for each and every person. It can change throughout the day. In general, blood sugar level should not be less than 70 mg/dl and more than 180 mg/dl. If your blood sugar is less than 70 mg/dl or more than 180 mg/dl for three days, you should call your doctor.
