Herbal remedies for kidney failure – Avoid dialysis, natural remedies for renal failure
By Dr. Vikram – MD – Ayurveda
Usually the kidney failure patients are suffering from the following associated conditions
High Potassium levels in blood
High Blood Sugar
Occult Blood in urine
Proteins in Urine
Low level of blood proteins i.e. decreased level of albumin and globulin
Blood Pressure – Sometimes only systolic may be high
High blood urea
High Creatinine levels
This is a typical picture of diabetic nephropathy patient. The patients who develop kidney failure due to chronic diabetes.
The kidneys become porous and they start loosing the proteins through urine. The kidney is not able to actively excrete toxins like blood urea and creatinine and their levels in blood increase leading to toxicity.
The potassium levels also increase leading to hyperkalemia. This usually exaggerates due to excessive use of potassium sparing diuretics. All this leads to renal failure and the immediate solution to get rid of increased urea and creatinine levels in blood seems only dialysis. Dialysis is just washing up of the blood i.e. clearing the blood from toxins. Dialysis does not seem to be a permanent solution of the problem. The drugs which are given to control sugar levels and blood pressure are already putting more burden on kidney function. So we need to use natural remedies for kidney failure as an adjuvant or alternative to the mainstream medicines. The herbs really help a lot in renal failure without causing any complications.
What is the remedy for renal failure ?
Ayurveda recommeds some herbs like Tribulus, Chicory, Corn Silk for kidney failure and high urea and creatinne. In Renal failure there is usually imbalance of electrolytes as well. Especially potassium imbalance.
Many fruits and vegetables do contain potassium but I won't say stop them completely…the high potassium is not only because of intake thru fruits/vegetables, but it's due to kidney's inability to remove excess potassium from the blood. We need to revive the kidneys so that they can excrete more potassium and body is able to digest more vegetables and fruits and they are not causing any harm. Fruits and vegetables in general cause good than harm.
The kidney failure is usually due to diabetes; a condition called diabetic nephropathy.
To get rid of the problem in real sense we need to focus on reviving the kidneys.
How to revive kidneys ?
Usually it is recommended to consume protein diet to improve level of proteins in the blood....always be in touch with your nephrologist and renal dietician for information about diet and kidney health. The proteins are going out of the kidneys and coming out in the urine. The blood protein levels remains low- the reason is kidney failure, but being MD in Ayurvedic medicine, I won't recommend too much of proteins. 50-100 gm a day is ok but more than that can cause increase in levels of urea and creatinine, which are end products of protein metabolism and putting more burden on already strained kidneys.
The high protein is not helping to revive the kidneys... so both the measures taken by regular doctors like not letting the potassium in and putting the protein in.... is not really helping the kidneys but helping the body to sustain for a while and later going towards a bigger problem....
What is the remedy for renal failure... Do not eat too many vegetables or fruits, and stop all the protein diet.... we need to make a balance...
First of all, reduce the dosage of potassium sparing diuretics...we can switch to natural herbal diuretics... like corn silk, mutrakrichantak churna, punarnava mandur tablets, chicory, asparagus, tribulus, varuna etc.
They not only act as natural diurectics, but also help the body to regain it's strength, help to cure anemia, assist liver function and they do not raise potassium levels either.
Secondly we need to revive the kidneys and help to restore their normal function. This is done by using various herbal remedies for renal failure combinations of herbs for renal failure as in mutrakrichantak and others. Chicory, Asparagus, artichoke, Tribulus, Crataeva nurvala and others are effective herbs to revive kidneys.
