Liver - The busiest organ of the body

Brief anatomy of liver

Anatomy Of Liver

Liver is a big, dark brown colored organ located in the upper right side of the abdomen. It weighs around 3 pounds and has two lobes, right and left.

Functions of Liver

Liver functions like an integrated unit that performs many functions at the same time.

On a broad level, Liver helps to flush out the harmful toxins from the blood.

Its main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive system and supply it to other parts of the body.

It also neutralizes the harmful chemicals and metabolites present in blood. It also makes important proteins that are required for different body functions.

It produces and releases bile which helps in the breakdown of the fat component of our meals.

It also contributes to the regulation of the immune system of the body by producing immune factors and removing bacteria.

Where is the Liver located in the body?

It is located on the upper right hand side of the body beneath the diaphragm and above the right kidneys, intestines and stomach.

Can your Liver regenerate?

The most distinct feature of Liver is its ability to regenerate. It's the only organ in the body to do so.

If, due to any acute condition, 50 – 60 % of the Liver cells get damaged, then the Liver will quickly regenerate its each and every cell within a span of 2- 3 days.

There are many complicated liver conditions in which the liver is not able to regenerate completely. In such a case, there is permanent damage or scarring of the tissues.

At the place of scar, a new fibrosed tissue develops which is unlike the earlier functioning tissue.

As a result, there occurs partial or complete loss of function of a part or whole of the Liver. For example, in case of Liver cirrhosis multiple scarring of the Liver occurs greatly hampering Liver function.

What is liver cleansing?

Liver cleansing is the collective term given to all the dietary and general measures taken to protect the Liver so that it keeps functioning for a long time.

In order to maintain a healthy Liver function, it is important to eat a balanced diet rich in anti –oxidants.

Anti –oxidants are substances that help to neutralize the harmful chemicals released as by product of metabolism and cause damage to the Liver cells.

A healthy diet helps to maintain a healthy Liver function. Excessive drinking, smoking, eating junk food etc. can have damaging effects on the Liver.
