What is Curcumin ?

Curcumin is the biologically active phytochemical from the herb turmeric which is a very important herb used as a spice in Indian cooking since ages. Curcumin is actually taken from the rhizome of Turmeric. Turmeric belongs to Ginger family of the plants and the rhizome is yellowish in color. The fresh rhizomes are collected from huge turmeric organic farms and washed, dried and then powdered. This Turmeric powder is used as a seasoning worldwide and curcumin is actually responsible for yellow color of turmeric. The powder is used to make the extract of turmeric called Curcumin extract. The extract is standardized to contain 95 % of curcuminoids which are the active alkaloid found in the herb Turmeric. The process of standardization is a cumbersome procedure but once the 95 % level of standardization is achieved the extract gives excellent results even in low doses of about 1-2 grams per day in adults and 500 mg to 1 gm in children.

Its basis is often suppressed emotion or emotional stagnation, which causes accumulation of toxic material, and excess doshas. Hence, physical remedial measures are not enough to restore health.

So, following these steps will reduce the chances of rapidly multiplying cells.

Curcumin was previously shown to have anti-tumor activity but its effects on the immune system were unknown - until now.

Gaurisankar Sa and colleagues showed that curcumin boosts the immune system of tumor-bearing mice by restoring key immune cells called CD4 and CD8 T cells. The scientists also showed that curcumin increases the production of proteins that cause immune cells to proliferate and reduces the production of proteins that destroy immune cells.
