ALCOHOLIC LIVER DISEASE (ALD)

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a liver disease that is caused due to overconsumption of alcohol. Liver is the largest internal organ in the human body. Liver helps in the metabolism of alcohol, chemicals and other drugs. It produces bile which eliminates toxic substance from the body and helps in the healthy digestion. Alcohol is the major cause of liver disorder. Regular and continuous drinking of alcohol leads to damage to liver cells.

What are different types of Alcoholic liver disease?

There are three types of alcohol liver disease that are explained below:

1. Alcoholic fatty liver disease:

It is a type of alcoholic liver disease in which excessive consumption of alcohol leads to accumulation of fat in the liver. This disease is also known as Steatosis.

2. Alcoholic Hepatitis:

It is a type of alcoholic liver disease in which excessive consumption of alcohol leads to liver inflammation. Person with this type of disease is at high risk of developing cirrhosis.

3. Alcoholic Cirrhosis:

It is a type of alcoholic liver disease in which excessive alcohol consumption leads to liver scarring. In this condition, soft healthy tissue is replaced by hard, dead and scar tissue. Person with cirrhosis is at high risk of developing liver cancer.

What are the symptoms of Alcoholic liver disease?

Early symptoms of alcoholic liver disease are abdominal pain, loss of appetite, fatigue, diarrhea and feeling sick.

The more advanced symptoms are:

  • Swelling in the abdomen, legs, ankles and feet.
  • Yellowing of the skin (jaundice).
  • Weight loss, weakness, muscle wasting and vomiting blood.
  • Hair loss, itchy skin, blotchy red palms.
  • Memory problems
  • Frequent nose bleeding.
  • Sensitivity to alcohol and drugs because liver cannot process them now.

What are the factors that contribute to the development of Alcoholic liver disease?

The factors that contribute to the development of alcoholic liver disease are listed below:

  • Women generally weigh less than men and hence they are more susceptible to the toxicity of alcohol.
  • Any type of disease is worsened by drinking alcohol.
  • Consumption of drugs, chemicals and alcohol may lead to liver damage because this combination can be toxic to the liver.
  • Regular consumption of large amounts of alcohol leads to malnutrition in some people.

How can Alcoholic liver disease be diagnosed?

No specific test can accurately diagnose the Alcoholic liver disease. Combination of tests are required to diagnose this type of disease such as medical history and physical examination, blood tests, liver biopsy and ultrasound.

What is liver biopsy?

Liver biopsy is a test that is used to diagnose liver disease. In this test, a small tissue sample of liver is removed and examined under microscope.
