Cholesterol Levels

Cholesterol is a fat like substance which is produced naturally by liver in our body. It is necessary for good health but high levels of cholesterol in our body can increase the risk for heart disease.

What are the different types of cholesterol?

There are 2 types of cholesterol which are explained below:

1. Good cholesterol

Good cholesterol is known as high density lipoprotein (HDL). A high level of high density lipoprotein may lower the risk of heart disease. It helps our body to remove bad cholesterol by carrying it through the blood stream and artery walls to liver, From where it is broken down and excreted From our body.

2. Bad cholesterol

Bad cholesterol is known as low density lipoprotein (LDL). Low density lipoprotein cholesterol can cause more plaque to form in our arteries. LDL of 190 or more is considered very high.

What are the complications of high cholesterol levels in the body?

High cholesterol levels in the body can cause atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is an accumulation of cholesterol on the walls of our arteries. These accumulation can reduce the flow of blood through our arteries. This can lead to chest pain, heart attack and heart strokes.

What are the risk factors of high cholesterol levels?

Risk factors for high cholesterol level are listed below:

  • Smoking, alcohol consumption.
  • Unhealthy diet.

How can cholesterol levels be lowered through our diet?

Foods which are high in dietary cholesterol such as high fat dairy products, meats (pork, beef, lamb and organ meat) and processed foods should be avoided. We should eat more fiber. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains should be taken in our diet. Trans fats and saturated fats often found in packaged foods, butter, coconut oils and fast foods should be taken in a limited amount. Instead of these trans and saturated fats, we should take monostaurated fats found in peanut, olive and canola oils.
