What is acidity?

What is heartburn?
Heart burn is not a heart problem as the name indicates but it is a form of indigestion which is felt as burning sensation in the chest. It is an irritation of esophagus which in turn is caused by stomach acid. It is also common in pregnant women.
What is the cause of heartburn?
The function of lower esophageal sphincter, also known as LES, is to keep the stomach acid in the stomach. The lower esophageal sphincter is located below the rib cage on the left where the esophagus meets the stomach. This LES opens up normally and allows the food into the stomach and then closes again. If this LES opens and does not close tight enough as it should, then it can cause, stomach acid reflux, or seep into the stomach which in turn causes burning sensation.
Too much food in the stomach due to overeating causes too much pressure on the stomach which in turn causes heartburn. Certain foods such as tomatoes, garlic, onions, chocolate, citrus fruits, coffee, alcohol and meals rich in fats and oils lead to heart burn. Some medicines may even cause heartburn.
