Saindhavadi Taila (Oil)
Reference: Bhaishajya Ratnavali Nadivrana Rogadhikara 39
Abstract
Saindhavadi Taila is a classical Ayurvedic medicated oil formulation primarily used in external therapies for managing pain, stiffness, and swelling associated with Vata disorders. It is prepared with rock salt (Saindhava Lavana) and sesame oil as the base, along with specific herbal ingredients that impart anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and Vata-pacifying actions. It is very effective in the management of anal problems. The oil is widely applied in Panchakarma procedures like Abhyanga, Basti, and local applications to relieve musculoskeletal ailments and joint discomfort.
Introduction
Ayurveda emphasises the use of medicated oils to restore the balance of doshas and maintain the health of body tissues. Saindhavadi Taila is a classical preparation mentioned in Bhaishajya Ratnavali for its effectiveness in alleviating Vata and Kapha-related disorders, particularly in Pilonidal Sinus. The presence of Saindhava Lavana (rock salt) makes it unique, as it enhances penetration of the oil, improves circulation, and reduces stiffness and pain. It is also beneficial in arthritis, paralysis, muscle wasting, and joint disorders.

- Daru Haridra – Tree Turmeric (stem) – Berberis aristata – 35 gms
- Taila – Sesame oil – Sesamum indicum – 1 litre
- Water – 4 litres
Description Of Ingredients
1. Saindhava Lavana
Rock salt is primarily sodium chloride with trace minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Its hygroscopic and antimicrobial nature helps cleanse the pilonidal sinus by reducing pus and infection. The mineral salts also improve circulation, reduce swelling, and relieve stiffness. It acts as a Srotoshodhaka (channel purifier) that aids healing and tissue regeneration in inflamed areas.
2. Arka
Calotropis procera contains cardenolides, triterpenoids, flavonoids, and alkaloids. These compounds show strong antimicrobial and wound-healing effects, useful in pilonidal sinus, where bacterial infections are common. Its anti-inflammatory action helps reduce swelling around the sinus tract. In musculoskeletal conditions, it enhances local blood flow and reduces stiffness and pain.
3. Maricha
Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is rich in piperine, chavicine, and volatile oils. Piperine has antimicrobial properties that help prevent secondary infections in the pilonidal sinus. Its potent anti-inflammatory action reduces local swelling and pain. Piperine also enhances the bioavailability of other herbal compounds, strengthening their effect on musculoskeletal pain and stiffness.
4. Chitrak (Root)
Plumbago zeylanica root contains plumbagin, a naphthoquinone compound with powerful antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Plumbagin supports the breakdown of unhealthy tissue and aids in wound healing, making it beneficial for the pilonidal sinus. It also reduces swelling and improves circulation, thus supporting musculoskeletal recovery and reducing stiffness.
5. Bhringraj
Eclipta alba contains wedelolactone, ecliptine, and flavonoids. Wedelolactone has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions that assist in healing the pilonidal sinus and reducing infection risk. It also supports the regeneration of healthy tissues. In musculoskeletal disorders, Bhringraj reduces pain, nourishes muscles, and supports recovery from weakness or stiffness.
6. Haridra
Turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa) is rich in curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and volatile oils. Curcumin’s strong anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects help control infection and inflammation in the pilonidal sinus. It promotes wound healing by reducing oxidative stress and encouraging tissue repair. In musculoskeletal disorders, curcumin relieves pain, reduces stiffness, and protects cartilage and joints.
7. Daru Haridra
Tree Turmeric (Berberis aristata) contains berberine, oxyacanthine, and berbamine. Berberine exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, making it useful in managing pilonidal sinus with bacterial infection. It also has wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties that promote faster recovery. In musculoskeletal disorders, berberine reduces oxidative stress, joint inflammation, and stiffness.
8. Taila
Sesame oil (Sesamum indicum) contains sesamol, sesamolin, sesamin, and vitamin E. These compounds provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial benefits. In pilonidal sinus, sesame oil serves as a base that enhances penetration of herbal actives and helps in reducing local inflammation. For musculoskeletal disorders, it nourishes joints, improves flexibility, and reduces stiffness by strengthening muscles and connective tissues.
Method Of Preparation
- Take Saindhava Lavana, Arka Mool Twak (Calotropis procera), Maricha (Piper nigrum), Chitraka Moola (Plumbago zeylanica), Bhringraj (Eclipta alba), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata) (each 35 g) and Sesame oil 1 litre.
- First, prepare the Murchchhana (purification and processing) of sesame oil to enhance its quality and remove impurities.
- Make a fine powder of the seven herbal ingredients (excluding sesame oil).
- Add water to this fine powder and grind on a stone slab to prepare a paste (Kalka).
- Mix this herbal paste with the processed sesame oil and add 4 litres of water.
- Cook the mixture on a mild fire (mandagni) until the water content evaporates, leaving only the medicated oil.
- Once the aqueous portion is completely dried, remove the oil pot from the stove and filter the oil through a clean cloth.
- Allow the oil to cool, then store it in a clean glass container.
