About Angina
Heart problems arise mainly due to improper diet and stressful life styles. Angina is one of the first signs of serious heart disease. Most heart attacks occur because of clot, which forms at the site of a blockage caused by atherosclerosis. The main cause is atherosclerosis (dhamani praticaya in Ayurveda) or hardening of arteries resulting in obstruction and aggravated vata dosha along with above conditions leads to pain known as angina. Angina Pectoris is a clinical syndrome rather than a disease. This denotes a discomfort due to transient myocardial ischemia (deficiency of blood in a part). This obstruction leads to hindrance in the blood supply to coronary artery. Artherosclerosis is caused by altered lipid values in the body. Steps to prevent angina pectoris will help you to prevent heart attack. Planet Ayurveda will help you in preventing angina.
Signs and Symptoms of Angina
Typical Anginal pain often refers over middle or lower breastbone sometime in epigastric region. The pain spreads to left or right arm or both, sometime radiates to neck or jaw. Sometimes pain starts in the wrists, upper arms or face and then spreads to the chest. The pain is provoked by any physical exertion like walking fast, climbing up and cold weather. Even over excitement, fear and anger aggravates the pain.
- Discomfort only in left shoulder or left upper arm
- Pressure on chest or burning pain
- Choking sensation in throat
- Belching or increased urination after an attack
- Dizziness or faintness
- In severe pain sweating and nausea are seen
- Tachycardia
- Rise in Blood Pressure
- Steady pain while it lasts
- Pain can last to 1 – 4 minutes
As there are many reasons for chest and arm pain. Angina must be differential diagnosed from:
- Painful rib joint (costo-chondritis)
- Arthritic pain
- Muscular pain
- Pleurisy
- Paricarditis
- Pathological and radiological investigations can confirm the angina.
Preventing yourself from fatty food and flushing out cholesterol deposits from your body will keep you away from angina. The risk factors for angina depend upon age, sex, family history, blood pressure, cholesterol level and smoking. Women are more susceptible to heart attacks after they go through menopause. The LDL cholesterol is responsible for causing deposition of fatty cholesterol, therefore named as “bad – cholesterol”. On the other hand HDL cholesterol helps in removing cholesterol deposits from the arteries that is why HDL is called “good cholesterol. Alone high blood pressure can increase the risk of heart attack, but when total cholesterol level is high, the risk is increased at a greater extent. Smoking increases the risk of spasm and formation of clot in your blood.

Vata vitiates mainly due to Dhatu-kshaya (weakness in the tissues), alteration in pitta dosha and any kind of obstruction in natural path of vata.
Therefore, angina can be managed by pacifying vata and correcting pathology behind the obstruction.
