About Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia nervosa is a complex eating disorder which is defined by an inability of a person to maintain his body weight within 15 percent of their ideal body weight. It may occur due to stress, bad lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits.
Types of Anorexia Nervosa
There are two types of anorexia nervosa – Restricting type and Purging type. In the former type, weight loss is achieved by restricting calories. By following drastic diets, fasting and by doing excess of exercises are some of the ways to lose weight. If a weight loss is achieved by vomiting or by using laxatives and diuretics, then it is purging type of anorexia.
Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa
Common Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa are Listed Below:
- Excess of weight loss is the main symptom of this disease.
- Fatigue, thin appearance, abnormal blood counts.
- Bluish Discoloration of the fingers and yellowish color of the skin.
- Constipation, dehydration, low blood pressure.
- Thinning of hair.
- Insomnia, dizziness
- Refusal to eat, denial of hunger, fear of gaining weight, depression and irritation are some of the behavioral symptoms of this disease.
Complications of Anorexia Nervosa
There are several complications of Anorexia nervosa. Abnormal heart rhythms are the most common complications of anorexia nervosa. Other complications of anorexia nervosa are anemia, bone loss, heart problems, kidney problems, gastrointestinal problems, electrolyte abnormalities. Every organ of the body may get damaged when a person suffering from this disease becomes severely malnourished. This disease can lead to various mental disorders such as depression, anxiety and personality disorders.
Anorexia in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, Anorexia is known as Aruchi. It is caused by the aggravation of all the three doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha) of the body. Ayurveda describes these doshas as the forces or energies of our body. There are 5 different types of Aruchi, according to Ayurveda.
Vataja Aruchi: This type of Aruchi is caused by the vitiation of Vata dosha and is characterized by astringent taste in the mouth.
Paittik Aruchi: This type of Aruchi is caused by the vitiation of Pitta dosha and is characterized by a bitter taste in the mouth.
Kaphaja Aruchi: It is caused by the vitiation of Kapha dosha and is characterized by total loss of appetite and sweet taste in the mouth.
Sannipathaja Aruchi: This type of Aruchi is caused by aggravation of all the three doshas.
Agantuja Aruchi: The symptoms of this type of Aruchi are similar to that of Vataja Aruchi.
