Causes of Ulcerative Colitis
The exact cause of this disease is not known, but there are some factors which contribute to this disease. Pancolitis:

Fulminant colitis:
This type of colitis is a severe form of pancolitis and is rare.
Complications of Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis increases the risk of developing colon cancer. It may lead to thickening of the intestinal walls, sepsis (blood infection), dehydration, kidney stones, ankylosing spondylitis, toxic megacolon (rapid swelling in the colon) and a hole in the colon.

There are some tests which can be used to diagnose ulcerative colitis. These tests include stool test, blood test, endoscopy, colonoscopy, biopsy and x-rays of the colon and rectum using barium.
