Halitosis

Halitosis or bad breath is a term used to describe unpleasant odors exhaled in breathing. It is estimated to be the third most common disease related to tooth decay or periodontal disease. In more than 90% of the cases, bad breath originates in the mouth itself. However, its intensity can differ during the day and due to eating certain foods such as garlic, onions, meat etc. During night, the mouth is less exposed to oxygen and is inactive. Usually the odor is worse upon awakening in the morning. Halitosis often disappears after brushing the teeth and rinsing with special mouthwash. Chronic bad breath is a more serious condition and affects nearly 25% of the population worldwide. Other causes of halitosis or bad breath may include tobacco chewing, smoking, drinking alcohol, gum disease and anemia.

Tongue is the most common location for mouth-related halitosis. Bacteria in the tongue produce different compounds and fatty acids and nearly account for more than 80% of all cases of mouth-related halitosis. According to some researchers, stomach dis-orders are also related with the symptoms of bad breath.

The most common symptom of halitosis is the dry mouth. It has been reported as the main cause of halitosis. Dry mouth or ‘xerostomia’ causes a number of changes to occur in the mouth and may result in the formation of a white or yellow film on the tongue. This film is caused by the accumulation of bacteria and nasal mucous in the tongue. Other common symptoms observed in halitosis patients include bitter and sour tastes, post-nasal drainage, white nodules on the tonsils etc. Brushing the teeth makes no improvement and further may lead to loss of even self-confidence.

Infect, the daily necessity is thorough brushing to remove food particles. Other options are regular check-ups to check gum disease, carious teeth, overhanging fillings, leaking crowns etc. The odor of periodontal disease is a common cause of halitosis and can be easily treated. Another halitosis treatment is gargling with special mouthwash. Mouthwashes are only short-term halitosis treatment. Simple lifestyle changes can also be effective in the treatment of halitosis. To start with halitosis treatment; the amount of teeth, mouth and tongue cleanings should be increased every day. Another important aspect that can be an effective in the treatment is keeping the mouth moist. In most patients, lack of saliva and moisture has been observed to result in bad breath or halitosis.

Since ancient times, most people were using herbs for bad breath. Many herbs have been reported to have pleasant flavors and scents that helps to mask a bad odor on the breath. Most natural herbs also have antiseptic qualities that assist in the control of activities of bacteria in the mouth. Most natural mouthwashes are developed from herbal remedies.
