Ayurvedic Treatment of Fatty Liver

Fatty Liver

Fatty Liver – The Silent Disease

Do you know over 80 million Americans are currently suffering from a silent disease called Fatty liver disease? Although the name says fatty liver but you will be surprised that the cause is not consuming fats but sugars. Liver stores the excessive supply of sugars in the form of fats for future consumption. If you don't consume calories, then these sugars are converted by liver into fats. The excess fats get deposited in liver and around belly in men. In women, this gets deposited in liver, thighs, buttocks, waist and breasts.

Why it is called Silent disease?

Because most of the people have it and there are hardly any people who know about it.

Many people think that the liver is damaged by drugs, alcohol, smoking or such things. They don't know that sugar is one of the most important damaging reasons other than those mentioned above. If you are craving for sugars, then most probably it's your fatty liver.

Many patients are suffering from Non-Alcoholic Fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the scenario is serious in 21st century as our food habits have changed considerably. The soda drinks and fast food, refined white flour is the major cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Sometimes it's also called sedentary fatty liver disease.

If you look at liver cells of a person suffering from NAFLD, you will see the cells are inflamed and are studded with molecules of triglycerides. They are not able to perform their work which is clear the toxins, process various hormones. The accumulation of toxins leads to other metabolic disorders, hormonal imbalances and even more chances of getting diabetes and heart problems.

Causes of Fatty Liver

As suggested earlier, excessive consumption of refined flour, soft drinks is a leading cause of fatty liver disease. Alcohol, drugs are another major reason for this problem but these reasons are known to many. Consumption of soft drinks, calorie rich sugary foods such as refined flour is causing such a devastating illness in our body is not known to many.

About a hundred years ago before the invention of sugar, the diet mainly consists of natural foods and free from preservatives. Now the packaging revolution, invention of refined sugar and flour, frozen food, preservative rich fruit juices, soda based soft drinks have become trend.

With new technology, humans are becoming more and more sedentary leading to further accumulation of calories. The liver has to process all the preservatives, chemicals found in the preserved, processed foods available in today's world. This puts a lot of burden on the liver and liver becomes fatty.

Symptoms of Fatty Liver

Fatty liver does not show any symptoms at all. In general all mildly obese people having pot belly should be considered having fatty liver. The liver function tests which measure levels of liver enzymes are indicative of liver damage. Liver cells are called hepatocytes and their inflammation is called Hepatitis, especially when it's caused by viruses like A, B, C, D, E, F, G.

In fatty liver, the inflammation is caused by accumulation of fat cells within the hepatocytes. The enzymes present within the liver cells come out in the blood. These enzymes are SGOT, SGPT and GGT etc. They bile pigments like bilirubin also come out in the blood in case of liver damage. The elevation of enzymes and pigments levels in the blood leads to diagnosis of fatty liver disease and other damaging causes to liver cells but still in most of the cases the diagnosis of fatty liver can be made by visualizing the contour, size and shape of the liver through Ultrasound and MRI.

The fatty liver, especially the one caused by sedentary life style and excessive calories consumption can go unnoticed until it causes permanent damage to liver cells also called Liver Cirrhosis. Liver cirrhosis stage becomes difficult to treat than fatty liver.

How to Treat Fatty Liver Naturally?

As mentioned above, it's caused by too much diet, soft drinks, soda based drinks, squashes, packaged fruit juices, butters, refined sugars and refined flour, the intake of all these things should be curtailed to zero.

The noodles, biscuits, pizzas, pastas, heavy cheesy gravy rich food, heavy non-veg diet, French fries, burgers, fried potatoes are all causative agents to cause fatty liver.
