About Pleurisy

Pleurisy is an inflammation of pleura. Pleurisy is also known as “Pleuritis”. Pleura is the moist and double layered membrane which surrounds the lungs and lines the rib cage. Normally when we breathe, then the tissues that lines our lungs and the chest wall rub together. When this pleura (tissues) is infected, it becomes swollen and irritated. It causes extreme pain.

Causes of Pleurisy

Pleurisy is commonly caused by virus infection.

Several other causes of pleurisy are:

  • Bacterial pneumonia, chest wounds, tuberculosis, rib fractures.
  • Lung tumors, trauma to the chest wall, blood clots in the arteries.
  • Lung cancer.
  • Complications due to heart surgery.
  • Immune system disorders.
  • Pancreatitis.
  • Parasitic infections.
  • Sickle cell anemia.

Symptoms of Pleurisy

The main symptom associated with pleurisy is a sharp and cutting pain while breathing. The pain get worse while sneezing and coughing. Fever, loss of appetite and chills are other common symptoms of pleurisy.

Several other symptoms of pleurisy are:

  • Pain on one side of chest.
  • Pain in neck and shoulders.
  • Headaches, joint pain.
  • Muscle aches, breathing problems.
  • Back pain.

Pleural Effusion and Pleurisy

Pleural effusion is the buildup of fluid which puts pressure on the lungs which in turn causes them to stop working properly. Initially, this fluid acts like a cushion, causing the pain in the chest to disappear. As the fluid increases, person with pleural effusion will experience breathing problems. Pleurisy can be accompanied by this Pleural effusion.

How can Pleurisy be Diagnosed?

The Chest X-rays, blood tests, CT scan, Ultrasound, Thoracentesis, biopsy and Thoracoscopy are some of the tests through which Pleurisy can be diagnosed.
