A nut is a fruit composed of a seed and a hard shell which is generally edible. Although they are small in size, they are a nutritional power house as they consist of heart-healthy fats, minerals, proteins and vitamins. However, not all nuts are created equal.

1. Almonds

These are pale oval nuts which are highly rich in calcium. This ensures that your body is getting enough bone-building mineral. They are also rich in vitamin E which helps improve the skin’s appearance and condition. As if that is not enough, the almond’s skin is rich in heart-protecting compounds which are known as flavonoids.

2. Cashew Nuts

These curvy nuts are the great source of protein and contain minerals such as zinc and iron. If you are a vegetarian, these nuts will be of great use as they contain the essentials that are found in meat. Besides that they are also highly rich in the mineral magnesium which are said to help those with age-related memory loss and improve on recalling ability of a person.

3. Brazil Nuts

The Brazil nuts are said to be ideal for those with low thyroid function. They are a good source of selenium mineral which enables the body to produce the active thyroid hormone. The selenium mineral is also essential as it boosts the body’s immunity and helps wounds to heal.

4. Chest Nuts

Chest nuts are the nuts with the least fat and calories. They are rich in fibre as well as starchy carbs. Although being low in protein when compared to other nuts, they contribute B vitamins including vitamin B6 to the body.

5. Walnuts

These nuts are rich in antioxidants which aids the body in the fight against cancer. They are a good source of heart-friendly fats and studies have proven that they help in lowering the bad form of cholesterol. Besides that, they are an excellent source of omega-3. If you do not like oily fish then the walnuts are a potential substitute.

6. Pistachios

Pistachios are very rich in vitamin B6.They are also important for keeping body hormones in balance and healthy. They contain two major antioxidants namely lutein and zeaxanthin that play an important role in protecting the eyes. As if that’s not enough, pistachios are also a source of potassium which is also important for proper function of all cells, tissues and organs in the human body.

Worst Nuts for Your Health

1. Macadamia Nuts

Compared to other nuts macadamia nuts have the most calories along with the lowest amounts of protein and highest amounts of fats. Nutritionists advise that you practice proper proportion control when taking these nuts so as to remain healthy.

2. Pecans

Similar to the macadamia nuts these nuts have low protein and high amounts of fat as well as many calories. Eating a large amount at the same time is not advisable as it will be harmful to your health.
