Respiratory system is one of the most important system on which the life sustains. The inhalation of oxygen and expiration of carbon dioxide by lungs is known as respiration. Difficulty in breathing or respiration is sometimes due to asthma.

Asthma is commonly seen condition now days due to increasing pollution, stress and changed life style. In the past decade number of asthmatic persons has increased vigorously. Youngsters to old people, anyone can suffer from asthma. Asthma is not communicable. Asthma affects airways known as bronchial tubes.

During the normal process of breathing the air goes normally through the nose into the windpipe (trachea), it then passes through bronchial tubes and reaches the lungs and lastly reverse out again. But in asthmatic persons these airways get inflamed and start producing mucus that in turn blocks the airways. The asthmatic persons are hypersensitive to certain allergens. As a result of hypersensitivity the muscles fiber of the airways tightens, bringing difficulty in breathing.

Symptoms of asthma

  1. Recurring episodes of wheezing

  4. Coughing (particularly at night)
  5. Sweating

Whenever the lining of airways swells up, broncho-constriction occurs and mucus plugs the airways, attack of asthma takes place.

  3. Physical exertion
  4. Airborne pollutants and irritants such as smoke, paints, strong perfumes

In Ayurveda, asthma is similar to Tamaka shwas, a type of Shwasa roga. The vitiation of kapha dosha, vata dosha along with pranavaha srotas (respiratory system), anna vaha srotas (digestive system) and rasa dhatu (digestive juices) are pathological factors responsible for shwasa or asthma. Firstly, the alleviation of vata and kapha dosha gives symptomatic relief and for total relief pacification of pitta dosha is must.
