Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
There are four chambers in our heart. Two atria are present in the upper half of our heart while two ventricles are present in lower half of the heart. The function of the ventricles is to send the blood to our organs and tissues while the function of atria is to receive the blood from the various organs. Congestive heart failure occurs when our ventricles cannot pump enough blood that is required for normal functioning of the heart. CHF is a chronic condition which affects the chambers of our heart.
Types of congestive heart failure
There are two types of CHF which are explained below:
Left sided CHF - This type of congestive heart failure is the most common type of CHF that damages our left ventricle. It leads to building up of fluid in our lungs, which in turn causes difficulty in breathing.
Right sided CHF - This type of congestive heart failure occurs when the right ventricle has difficulty in pumping the blood to our lungs. It causes the retention of blood in the lower extremities, abdomen and other vital organs.
Causes of Heart failure
There are various health conditions that lead to congestive heart failure.
Main causes of heart failure are explained below:
Heart attack - When a coronary artery suddenly becomes blocked, then a heart attack occurs. It stops the blood flow to the heart. It damages the heart muscle and results in improper functioning of heart.
Heart arrhythmia - It occurs due to irregular heart beat for a long period of time, which in turn may lead to heart failure.
Coronary heart disease - It causes decreased blood flow to our heart and hence leads slowly to heart failure.
Cardiomyopathy - There are some other reasons such as infection from alcohol or drugs which lead to heart failure.
Other health conditions - High blood pressure, thyroid disease, kidney problems, valve disease, heart defects since birth are some other health conditions that cause heart failure.
Symptoms of congestive heart failure
Early symptoms of Congestive Heart failure are fatigue, swelling in the ankles, legs and feet, weight gain and increased need to urinate.
Later on, symptoms become worse and they include:
- Wheezing and irregular heart beat
