Healthy diet is the key source to maintain the overall health of the body. When it comes to diabetes, diet plays an important role in managing the blood glucose level. Diet low in fat and simple sugars can help balance the blood glucose level. Healthy weight is must for balancing the blood sugar level of a diabetic person.

What to avoid if you are suffering from diabetes?

A diabetic person should avoid processed sugars which include those that are used in cookies, cakes, candies, sodas, honey, chocolate and desserts. Dried fruits should also be avoided. A Diet high in fat and sugars must be avoided. Smoking should be avoided as much as possible. Drink alcohol only in moderate amount. Very large doses of vitamin B1 and C must be avoided as excessive amounts of these vitamins may inactivate insulin. However, normal amount of these vitamins can be taken.

A Diet high in fiber, such as plenty of raw fruits and vegetables as well as fresh vegetable juices is beneficial as these foods decrease the need for insulin. Berries, dairy products, egg yolks, fish, garlic, soybeans, brewer's yeast are some of the other foods that help normalize the blood sugar level to a great extent. Include grains and legumes for the protein sources. Saturated fats must be avoided as much as possible.

Importance of exercise in managing diabetes

In general, exercise is the common term which is used to describe any bodily activity that maintains physical fitness as well as the overall health of the body. A diabetic patient is required to exercise regularly not only for healthy blood glucose level, but also for reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases as well. Muscle movements during exercise leads to better uptake of sugar by muscle cells and hence lowers the blood sugar level in the body. Exercise also helps to maintain a healthy heart and healthy weight. It is one of a great way for stress management as well.
