Diet & Lifestyle Modifications for Smokers with Lung Damage

  1. Flavonoids rich foods such as green tea, strawberries, black tea and apples are a good source of anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Beans, onions and brussels sprouts are also a rich source of anti-oxidants.
  2. For this a diet rich in Vitamin A should be advised like papaya, collard green, carrot and cantaloupe.
  3. Eliminate junk food, sodas and processed foods. These are loaded with sugars, chemicals and artificial sweeteners and salts.Consume a diverse variety of fruits and vegetables.
  4. Exercise regularly according to the body strength to improve breathing. Breathing exercises like pranayama are very beneficial in patients of lung damage. They improve the lung function over time.
  5. Avoid areas of heavy traffic and the ones that have highly polluted air.Maintain good air circulation indoors, at home as well.The air insidethe house should also be fresh so proper measures should be taken for that.
  6. Licorice root extract is very beneficial.
  7. Chlorella as a food item can be consumed to detoxify the body
  8. Drink plenty of water and sweat it out to detoxify.
  9. Consume ginger in all forms. Add it in your daily tea or in food preparation or as a salad or it can be sliced and chewed as raw.
  10. Vitamin C rich fruits and foods should also be taken like oranges, mandarin, apples and pumpkin etc.
  11. Include plenty of cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower in diet.
  12. Pomegranate juice is also very beneficial in patients with lung diseases.
  13. Grape fruits are also a good source of antioxidants which help purify blood.
  14. Magnesium rich foods like beans, nuts and seeds are very helpful in these patients.
  15. Chili peppers are a good source of capsaicin a spicy compound that stimulates mucous and improves blood flow.
  16. Turmeric is also very beneficial in lung patients.
  17. Red bell peppers are also very good for consumption in case of lung damage.
  18. Keep a check on body weight. Overweight people have to work harder to maintain normal breathing pattern.
