About Earache

Earache can feel like a sharp or dull pain or a burning sensation that can affect both ears or can occur only in one ear. It is more common in children and adults. The pain that results from earache can be constant or it can disappear with time and reappear again. The earache that results due to an ear infection can cause serious complications, especially for the babies and for children.

Common Symptoms of the Earache

  • Irritation and itching in the ears. Babies may appear hot and irritable.
  • Pulling or rubbing of an ear or ears.
  • Loss of appetite in children and poor feeding in babies.
  • Discomfort while sleeping and restless at night.
  • Coughing
  • Abnormal hearing

Causes of Earache

There are several different causes of the earache as the pain that results from this earache affects people in different ways. Some people may affect their ears themselves while some may get earache due to some other conditions that are affecting areas close to the ears.

Several causes of earache are well explained below:

  • Earache may occur due to the building up of fluid deep inside the ear drum and this condition is known as glue ear. It is more common in children as compared to adults.
  • Earache may result due to an infection of the ear canal.
  • It may occur due to the presence of a boiled or infected hair follicle in the ear canal.
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis is another reason for this earache. This condition is actually an eczema of an ear or ears.
  • Injury in the ear canal may cause earache.
  • Blockages in the ear are also responsible for earache.
  • Colds and throat infections are also responsible for earache.
  • Painful jaw, tooth pain even causes earache.
  • Facial nerve pain is also a reason behind earache.

Complications Due to Earache

Earache, if left untreated, can cause several other complications and hence should be treated at time. Earache may cause middle ear infection, inner ear infection and scarring of the eardrum. Hearing loss may occur due to earache. Mastoiditis, meningitis, facial paralysis are some other complications that may result due to earache.

Ways to Prevent Earache

There are some general ways that can help to prevent earache.

They are listed below:

  • Do not poke ear buds into the ear to remove wax from the ear.
  • Protect the babies from the common colds during the first year of their life. Because most of the ear infections start with the cold. Maintain a proper hygiene.
  • Contact with the second hand tobacco smoke should be avoided, as it increases the severity of ear infections.
  • Inflammation results from allergies is one of the contributing factors for ear infection and hence allergies should be controlled.
  • If babies are given bottle feeds then make sure that baby is at an angle because if the baby is in horizontal position, then fluid gets into the tubes in the ears.
