Herbal Treatment of Edema and Water Retention

According to Ayurveda, edema is known as "Shotha Rog" and the treatment is highly effective in almost all types of edema. Usually the water retention is caused due to many reasons.

Causes of Water Retention

  1. Sluggish liver or kidneys
  2. Obstruction in the lymphatic channels
  3. Congestive heart failure
  4. Anemia
  5. Low metabolism – Hypothyroidism
  6. Pregnancy
  7. Contraceptive pills overuse
  8. Steroids overuse
  9. Menstruation or Premenstruation
  10. Malnutrition
  11. Certain drugs

Major Causes of Water Retention and Edema

There are certain diseases which are the main reasons behind water retention of edema.

Water retention due to Kidney disease – Chronic kidney disease can be the reason for edema and water retention in many cases. The water retention is dependent upon extent of kidney damage. Chronic kidney disease is usually caused by uncontrolled chronic diabetes or hypertension. There are many other reasons for kidney failure but still diabetes and blood pressure are major reasons for kidney damage, thereby leading to water retention and edema if the kidneys start to fail. The treatment in this case is use of Punarnava Capsules – 2 twice daily to eliminate extra water from the body and Punarnavay also helps to aid the kidneys to function normally and helps in controlling blood pressure, diabetes and improve filtering capacity of the kidneys. Other products like Rencure, Mutrakrichantak Churna, Punarnava mandur and Varuandi Vati can be added if the edema is due to kidney failure or kidney disease.

Due to chronic damage to kidneys other toxins like urea, creatinine also increase and lead to complications. It is very important to use natural diuretics which do not cause side effects like electrolyte imbalance. Punarnava is one of those natural diuretics which are excellent for removing excess fluid from body without causing electrolyte disturbance.

Obesity – Punarnava capsules are also useful in Obesity as they help to eliminate toxins from the body.

Congestive Heart Failure is a major reason for water retention as the ejection fraction of the heart is very low in this disease. The heart is not able to pump with much force due to prolonged chronic hypertension. This leads to accumulation of water. The punarnava capsules not only help to eliminate the water from the body and reduce the edema but also help to provide strength to the heart muscles, kidneys and overall body. The edema caused by heart failure is usually pedal edema. Other herbs like Arjun tea, Arjuna Capsules, Total heart support can also be used in Congestive heart failure to improve heart function. To reduce edema and water retention, punarnava capsules or punarnava mandur alone are sufficient. The dosage is 2 capsules twice daily. There are no contraindications to the use of Punarnava capsules and they can be use along with modern diuretics. The result are almost similar to lasix and other diuretics but without any side effects or weakness.

Chronic Lung Diseases – Emphysema, COPD, Asthma, Chronic Bronchitis, Pulmonary fibrosis, Sarcoidosis, pneumonia and other lung diseases can lead to edema and water retention in the lungs. This is called pulmonary edema. The punarnava capsules help to reduce water retention from the lungs also. Other herbs like Tulsi, Curcumin, Vasaka, Praanrakshak Churna, Aller-G Care Capsules can be used along with Punarnava or Punarnava alone can be used to reduce edema.

Liver Diseases – Liver Cirrhosis caused by chronic alcohol consumption, hepatitis and other causes can lead to extensive liver damage. This can lead to gross edema and severe water retention. This is called Ascites if the water is retained in abdominal / peritoneal cavity. Sometimes the fluid is retained all over the body called Anasarca. The punarnava capsules help to reduce edema in both the conditions.

Other Causes of Water Retention and Edema

Diabetes, Allergies, Arthritis, Thyroid, Tumors, Head Injury, Hormonal imbalances can also lead to water retention and edema. "Puna" literally means Again and Nava means new. Punarnava capsules help to rejuvenate the tissues and reduce water retention due to any cause without causing any side effects. The capsules can be used in 2 twice daily dosage in any condition along with any ongoing treatments
