Insulin and Diabetes

Insulin and Diabetes

Insulin Therapy is Often Prescribed When:-

  • You have diabetes you may not make insulin at all (Type I)
  • You do not make enough to keep your blood glucose normal all the time (Type II).
  • You may be taking diabetes pills and they are not working well (Type II).

Tips on Taking Insulin

  • Take your insulin at the same times each day (relative to meals).
  • Balance your food and exercise with your insulin.
  • Too much activity or too little food can make your blood glucose drop low.
  • Too much food can make your blood glucose go high.
  • Rotate the area you give your shots, using a regular plan of moving from one site to another. For example, use all the sites in both arms before moving to your leg. This will keep your blood glucose more even from day-to-day.
  • If you take more than 1 shot each day, use a different area for each shot.
  • Do not change your insulin or insulin routine before talking to your doctor or diabetes educator.

Types of Insulin for Diabetes Treatment

There are many forms of insulin to treat diabetes. They are classified by how fast they start to work and how long their effects last. The Types of Insulin Include:

  1. Rapid-acting
  2. Short-acting
  3. Intermediate-acting
  4. Long-acting
  5. Pre-mixed

The FDA approved the inhaled insulin drug Exubera in 2006. But in October 2007 the drug company Pfizer said it was halting sales of the drug for financial reasons.

Types of Insulin

Your doctor will work with you to prescribe the type of insulin that is best for you and your diabetes. Deciding what type of insulin might be best for you will depend on many factors, including:

  • Your body’s individualized response to insulin (how long it takes insulin to be absorbed in the body and remain active in the body varies slightly from person to person).
  • Your own lifestyle choices — for instance, the type of food you eat, if/how much alcohol you drink, or how much exercise you get — are all factors that influence your body’s processing of insulin.
  • How willing you are to give yourself multiple injections per day.
  • How frequently you are willing to check your blood sugar level.
