What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and How to Treat it Naturally?

Best Ayurvedic Tips by Dr. Vikram Chauhan (MD-Ayurveda)

Interviewer: We were discussing about hepatitis but there is also digestive related problem IBS. Many people are suffering from it, these days. So please tell us about this IBS.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: IBS is called irritable bowel syndrome as name suggest irritable. Symptoms are also irritable as patient takes food in which ever quantity he has to pass the stool. Sometime it occurs immediately and sometimes with gap of 10-15 minutes. Its causes are not yet known in modern science. But in Ayurveda its cause is AMA.

Interviewer: What is Ama?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Ama is undigested food which left inside the body and act as toxins as in the ayurveda proper regime have to follow to take the food. There should be proper food intake time. People these days eating junks, irregular food habits and have no proper lifestyle about food. Taking food again and again, all these habits promote formation of Ama inside the body. Ama is a sticky substance. It is a metabolized substance whenever we eat something it is metabolized and convert into the end product. But when this end product is not made properly and remains intermediate. Which means food is not digesting properly and this intermediate end product is compared to the toxins which are AMA. This Ama makes coating over intestinal lining which leads to malabsorption. As food is not properly absorbed there as coating of Ama is not allowing proper absorption of digested food.

Interviewer: Does this Ama leads to irritation?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Ama leads to the mandaagni. Manda Agni means when the digestive fire is very low and not capable to digest food properly. As food is not digested properly due to Manda Agni (low digestive fire) so it is tend to throw out which leads to irritation.

Interviewer: Is there any treatment for IBS in ayurveda?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Yes, there is very effective and proper treatment for it in Ayurveda. I have treated many patients with IBS and got good results. In it, we use some herbs which show good results. In it one day fasting is also recommended as in fasting which is langhan when done as there is no food taken so it’s only Ama which is digested by the Agni and in such a way toxins inside the body got digested.so after it we gave medicines like Sanjivani vati and Chitrakadi vati which are mostly made of herbs and are hot in potency. They helps in enhancing the fire which starts improving the condition and patient start feeling better. There are also other combinations we use. Like bel which is also called as BILWA and its botanical name is aegle marmelos. Its other name is SADAPHAL as it is always there on tree.

Interviewer: Yeah, it’s very common in India as every common person know about it, as it is used in worshipping of GOD.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Yes, it has its religious use its leaves and fruits are used to worship God Shiva. Especially, on Monday. Its leaves are also very useful in treating diabetic patient. Along with this we use Curcumin capsules, Sanjivani vati, Chitrakadivati etc. with some pisthi formations which are old classical Ayurvedic preparations such as Vijay pisthi, Praval panchamrit, jahar mohra pisthi etc.

Interviewer: So there is its treatment in Ayurveda, but about allopathic or modern science treatment?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: In modern science or allopathic system, the treatment is more conservative type. They don’t guide on the lifestyle of about food habits.pt should be advised about food habits. Actually, there is no such medicine for this problem in modern science. But ayurveda has many ways of treating it.

Interviewer: In ayurveda, there are many herbs for treating it.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: We have many herbs, even in our homes, we can use black pepper, garlic, ginger, and Bel. But the patient needs to visit the doctor and had his NAADI PAREEKSHA done so we can check dosha imbalance and then only should start treatment.

Interviewer: Is Curcumin is available commonly or is very rare?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Curcumin is prepared from the common spice which is found in every Indian household called TURMERIC (Haldi). it also used in treating cancer. Also in diabetes.one should use turmeric regularly.

Interviewer: How come curcumin is different from the turmeric?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Curcumin is a product produced from the turmeric. But it is an extract form of turmeric. These days its capsules are available all over the world. These are more effective and better in DM, IBS, and Joints Pain.

Interviewer: As in India, turmeric is used on a regular basis in the kitchen so is there its effect on Indian population on health basis? As in other countries, it’s not used much.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Yes, as cancer is less here as compared to western countries where they use less spices. So one should use spices in the food they are good for health.

Interviewer: Ok so it’s good, and also effective in IBS?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Yes it’s very good in IBS also.

Interviewer: Thank you.
