What is Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)?

Cancer starts in your body when the normal cells mutated and start their uncontrolled growth. The cells can become cancerous from any parts of the body. Chronic Myeloid Leukemia is also a form of cancer which mainly affects the certain blood-forming cells of the bone marrow. In a healthy person, the bone marrow forms the blood stem cells which further differentiated into red blood cells, white blood cells, and blood platelets.

During Chronic Myeloid Leukemia there is an abnormal chromosome known as Philadelphia chromosome. Due to which the cells in the bone marrow does not mature completely. What Causes Chronic Myeloid Leukemia?

During Chronic Myeloid Leukemia there are certain changes in DNA that can cause normal bone marrow cells to become leukemia cells. Due to which there is an error in the genes within the DNA. People with CML generally have the Philadelphia abnormal chromosome, which contains the abnormal BCR-ABL gene. The BCR-ABL gene causes white blood cells to grow in an abnormal immature and uncontrolled way, causing leukemia. During such condition changes in DNA which turn on the oncogene and suppress the tumor suppressor gene. This is also one of the reasons behind the Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.
