Natural Treatment for Hyperacidity

About Hyperacidity

Hyperacidity is also known as 'acid dyspepsia'. It is the condition of excreting more amount of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Hyperacidity simply means increase of acidity in the stomach. The human stomach secretes hydrochloric acid which is necessary for the digestion of food. When an excessive amount of hydrochloric acid is released in the stomach, the condition is referred to as hyperacidity. Peptic ulcers have been reported to be one of the prime causes of hyperacidity. Other causes are gastro-esophageal reflux disease, stomach cancer and spicy food.

According to Ayurveda, indigestion is known as 'amalpitta'. It is the result of the imbalances in the agni of the body. Agni is the fire of the body and responsible for proper digestion. The Agni is properly balanced in a normal person, while in a person with hyperacidity; there is an imbalance of Agni. Any vitiation in Agni causes an imbalance of the pitta dosha. Vitiation in pitta dosha causes amalpitta and hence, amalpitta can be caused by low amounts of Agni (mandagni) or with high amounts of Agni (teekshagni).

Causes of Hyperacidity

Due to high acid in the stomach, gastric acids or hydrochloric acid may get refluxed up to the food pipe (esophagus). A hyperacidity that lasts more than two weeks or more must be immediately shown to a physician and got checked for any type of cancer.

Symptoms of Hyperacidity

The symptoms of hyperacidity can be observed a couple of hours after eating food. In this condition, when the food has been digested and still excess acids are left within the stomach. Various symptoms may include a typical feeling of restlessness, feeling of nausea, vomiting, sour belching, stiffness in the stomach, lack of desire for more food, indigestion and constipation. At this stage, smoking and drinking alcohol should be completely avoided. Also, stress conditions should be avoided and simple vegetarian food should be eaten.

Treatment of Hyperacidity

Allopathic treatment consists of antacids which may cause a lot of side-effects such as headache, dryness, hypersensitivity and confusion. On the other hand, herbal treatment is safe and free side-effects.
