About Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cyst is a health condition becoming very common now a days. The problem sometimes leads to multiple cysts also known as the PCOS or poly cystic ovarian syndrome. These tiny growths called 'cysts' are fluid filled sacs are just like a small blister on the ovaries. That's why they are called Ovarian Cysts. Most of the times they are benign or non-cancerous but some of them can be malignant or cancerous. The diagnosis is extremely important about their type whenever you suspect ovarian cysts. Cysts can vary in size. They are normally small, which means that you may not even know you have one, until a routine examination picks it up. However, some are large enough to cause menstrual irregularities or discomfort. Nature has given us so many herbal remedies for ovarian cysts which can be used in both benign and malignant cases along with the other remedies you are taking. These herbs help other treatments to work better and sometimes these herbs are so effective that they alone are good enough to care of ovarian cysts naturally.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

There are two main types of ovarian cysts functional and abnormal. They are further of many times depending upon their characteristics and causes.

Functional ovarian cysts

These kind of ovarian cysts are mainly due to minor alteration in the functioning of the ovaries. This alteration can be due to hormonal imbalance that leads to irregular menstrual cycle, painful menstrual flow or dysmenorrhea. The functional ovarian cysts can be of two types - follicular cysts and luteal cysts.

Follicular ovarian cysts appear in the first half of the menstrual cycle that is before ovulation, while the luteal ovarian cysts appear in the second half that is after ovulation. In case of follicular cysts, the egg is retained within the follicle that continues to grow as they becomes enlarged and filled with fluid. These kind of ovarian cysts are generally symptom free and diagnosed accidently through ultrasound.

Luteal Ovarian cysts develop in the second half of the cycle, after ovulation. After the egg is released from the follicle it develops into corpus luteum which normally produces progesterone hormone but in this case it is filled with blood and a cyst is formed. This is called luteal ovarian cyst.

Other types of Ovarian Cysts

There can be many other types of ovarian cysts. Most of them are benign but they can became malignant if their growth continues. Abnormal cell growth is the main reason for many of the ovarian cysts. Some cysts develop from cells on the outer surface of the ovaries. They grow big in size and they are attached to ovary by a stem. They generally do not cause remarkable symptoms but sometimes they can twist on their stem and lead to an emergency. These cysts are called Cystadenoma of ovaries.

The other types of ovarian cysts are:

Endometrial cysts

Inner lining of uterus begins to grow in parts of the body other than uterus. This is called Endometriosis. The endometrial patches can form on the ovaries creating cysts known as "Chocolate cysts" because they contain old blood. This type of ovarian cysts can cause severe pain sometimes.

Dermoid cysts (teratoma)

Dermoid cysts should be considered as tumors rather than simply cysts. Every one of your eggs has the potential to create another human being. Dermoid cysts are effectively structures that are filled with pieces of bone, teeth, hair and skin. So these kind of cysts can become malignant.

Polycystic ovaries

Sometimes large number of small cysts develop in the ovaries, generally accompanied by hormonal imbalance. This is called 'Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome' or PCOS. Although they are not big cysts but still they resemble them and cause problems.
