Gastritis is the degradation of the internal lining of the stomach. It may occur suddenly (Acute gastritis) or it may occur slowly (Chronic gastritis).
Symptoms of Gastritis
The common symptoms of gastritis are listed below:
- Irritation, Inflammation, burning sensation
- Abdominal bloating, abdominal pain
- Nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting
- Dark stools
- Indigestion
- Hiccups (feeling of fullness)
Causes of Gastritis
Gastritis can be caused by any one of the following reasons:
- Infection caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori, which lives in the mucous lining of stomach leads to gastritis. This infection can lead to ulcers and in some cases, it can even lead to stomach cancer.
- Excessive consumption of alcohol may cause gastritis.
- Stress, chronic vomiting and certain medications may even cause gastritis.
- Gastritis may be caused by infections due to bacteria and viruses.
- Bile reflux may also be responsible for gastritis. Bile reflux is a condition in which backflow of bile occurs from the bile tract to the stomach.
- Pernicious anemia is another condition that may lead to gastritis. It is a form of anemia, which occurs when our stomach lacks a substance which is essential for absorbing and digesting vitamin B12.
How can Gastritis be Diagnosed?
Gastritis can be diagnosed by several tests which include blood tests, under endoscopy, fecal occult blood test (stool test), etc.
Role of Diet in Gastritis
Unhealthy eating habit is one of the main causes of the gastritis. Irregular and overeating may lead to gastritis. Healthy diet is must for the overall health of the body. In case, you are suffering from gastritis, then, you should avoid spicy foods. Improperly cooked food should be avoided. Fatty foods and fried foods should also be avoided. Instead of taking three large meals, take several small meals a day. Alcohol should be avoided. Smoking should also be avoided. Limit the intake of coffee and other beverages that contain caffeine in it, such as tea or cola, etc.
