Ayurvedic Treatment of Scabies

About Scabies

Scabies is one of a highly contagious conditions that affects millions of people in the world and can be easily spread even by close physical contact (e.g. skin-to-skin contact). It can also be spread by bedding, clothing as well as furniture that is affected by a mite infestation. It is estimated that this condition affects over 300 million people in the world per year. Out of these 300 million people, the United States alone accounts for about 1 million. It mostly occurs in children and young adults.

Cause of Scabies

Sarcoptes scabies, a mite (tiny insect), is the major cause of this scabies. This mite is a parasite that lives off the host (human) that means it gives no benefit to the host. The symptoms of the scabies are mostly due to the response of the immune system to the mites or to their eggs or saliva or feces. The skin rash and itching, mostly occur due to the allergic like reaction of the body to the mites. The common symptoms of scabies are intense itching, especially at the night and the skin rash.

Can Scabies Go Away On Its Own?

No, scabies will not go away by its own. It requires proper treatment. If the eggs of the scabies are not killed by the first treatment, then the eggs may hatch again and cause symptoms of this problem again. If it is left untreated, then mites reproduce and cause more itching and sores.

Is There Any Ayurvedic Treatment For Scabies?

Scabies is known as pama, in Ayurveda. It is caused by the aggravation of kapha dosha along with the pitta dosha.

Scabies is of two types, according to Ayurveda:

Dry scabies is the type of scabies that is commonly found over the scrotal skin, over the nipples and in the anal orifice.

Pustular scabies is another type of scabies that usually starts in the finger webs and then spreads to the other skin folds. Pus is also filled in the blisters.

Ayurvedic treatment for any disease involves balancing of the aggaravated doshas as well as involves healthy lifestyle and healthy diet. Ayurvedic treatment for scabies involves balancing of kapha and pitta dosha.

There are some precautions we can take to avoid getting this disease. We should stay away from the contracted person and should wash our clothes separately. Itching should be avoided in order to prevent worsening of this problem and other infections.
