Helpful Information Shared by Dr. Vikram Chauhan (MD-Ayurveda)

Interviewer: Welcome Dr. Vikram, we are here and as you always share very good information about diseases so today I want to know about IBS which is very common these days. Irritable bowel syndrome. So please explain the causes and why someone suffers with this one and how the treatment goes.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: IBS as the name says Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Bowel the intestines they become irritable from the food we eat. Whatever food you take it irritates the intestines and the intestines want to get rid of the food. So immediately the person feels pressure to ease out or evacuate. He feels something in the body wants to get rid of it. So immediately this in Ayurveda it is called grahini roga. So grahini is going to pass the stool again and again. So body the intestines they not able to absorb the digest the food properly, they are not able to absorb the nutrients properly. So one feels lethargic, one feels weak, there is always a feeling of fullness, feeling of heaviness, feeling of gas in the body, flatulence in the stomach, so irritation.

Interviewer: So what causes this problem basically?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Basically there are certain ways of eating food, which nowadays we are lacking. There are certain methods described in Ayurveda how we should we eat food, what is time intervals should between the foods, and how which food to eat. Nowadays you see people are working, the work pressure has become too much. And day and night shifts people are working a lot of irregular routines, sitting on the chair and running, eating in front of the desk or TV. So irregular eating habits, it is not people they come to me they say we are not doing this but they have been doing this in the past. That’s why they suffer from the disease. And they stop doing that later on and then they say we don’t do it. But in past they have done it already. So eating once you eat the food you are not hungry and again you eat the food. So this is called binge eating. In Ayurveda atyasan it is called atyasan.so we first food is not digested properly and then you eat more. Then you get feeling of this body feels to want to get rid of this food. So this is irregular eating dietary habits. These are one of the leading cause of IBS.

Interviewer: So how Ayurveda helps in this condition?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Ayurveda, there are certain ayurvedic herbs like kutaj is a wonderful tree.

Interviewer: Is it a key herb?

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Ya it is the main herb for this IBS. So kutaj we use for grahini roga in all grahini diseases. IBS. The bark of tree we made tablets called Kutajghan vati its classical ayurvedic medicine. This classical ayurvedic medicine. We make the pills called kutajghan vati. And bilwa is another form of this tree bael fruit is useful. There are certain ayurvedic medicines which are curcumin is there and there are certain ayurvedic combinations. Vatasakadi churna is a wonderful product, a wonderful combination of herbs. Its a classical powder form of the herbs. Mixture blend of herbs. So vataskadi churna is wonderful for IBS. I use it along with kutajghan vati and others. Praval Panchamrit is there. We have pitta balance basically pitta balance contain praval pisthi, mukta pisthi, jaharmohra pisthi, Akik pisthi, all these ancient like coral calcium and all these things. Karpardika which were good for holding the giving strength over the intestine. So these all natural things.

Interviewer: Ok that’s great so how long one ok please carry on.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: In IBS one more thing I want to tell you. In IBS eating of too much food or irregular food leads to the formation of Ama. Ama is basically endotoxins, fermentation in the intestine. There is a kind of fermentation going on in the intestine. That fermentation leads to the feeling of lethargy, fatigue and tiredness, and feeling of fullness. And feeling to go to the toilet again and again so ama digestion is very important. This is the main thing one should focus on. And Sanjivani vati is one of the wonderful formulations in Ayurveda. It should be used in IBS patients. Sanjivani vati with doses of one morning and one evening and patient should also avoid heavy sticky greasy food. Like butter or some cheese, junk food, cola drinks, all these things so sleep is also very important regular sleep during the night.

Interviewer: So my question is how long one has to use these herbs to get rid of this IBS.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: The initial effects can be seen within one month. The person feels better in 15-20 days with changing the diet style and lifestyle.

Interviewer: Ok within a month one can get good benefits.

Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Within one month one can get good results. It should be used for 6 months or one year. 6 months is the ideal time.
