What is Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is also known as impotence. A man is said to have erectile dysfunction if he has regular difficulty in keeping or maintaining an erection enough for satisfactory sexual intercourse.
Is Erectile Dysfunction Physical or Psychological?
Erectile dysfunction can be both, physical and psychological. Usually it is due to physical cause. A normal process of erection involves both physical and psychological events.
Physical Causes of Erectile Dysfunction
Damage to arteries, fibrous tissues and smooth muscles is the common cause of erectile dysfunction. This damage can occur due to various factors which are listed below:
- Injury to the penis, prostate, bladder, pelvis and spinal cord.
- Disease such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, kidney disease.
- Hormonal factors like low testosterone levels.
- Complications due to surgery such as prostate cancer because these can interfere with blood flow to the penis.
- Deficiency of Zinc.
- Side effects of some medicines.
Psychological Causes of Erectile Dysfunction
At least 80 percent cases of erectile dysfunction occurs due to psychological factors in men who are less than 50 years old. The Psychological factors responsible for erectile dysfunction are listed below:
- Depression, anxiety, stress.
- Low self-esteem.
- Relationship problems.
Who can get Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction can occur in young men too but it is more common in older men.
What is the Normal Process of an Erection?
In the general process of an erection, mental or sensory stimulation or both are required. Brain and local nerves send the impulses to the muscles of the corpora cavernosa and allows the blood to flow in and fill the spaces. As a result, blood creates the pressure in the corpora cavernosa, which in turn causes the penis to expand. The tunica albuginea, the membrane that surrounds the corpora cavernosa, helps trap the blood in the corpora cavernosa and thereby maintaining erection. In the penis, when contraction of muscles stop the inflow of blood and open outflow channels, then erection is reversed.
Is there any Effect of Smoking and Alcohol on Erection?
Smoking slows down the flow of blood to the penis by causing damage to the blood vessels. Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to difficulty in getting an erection because alcohol slows down the central nervous system. If you are a regular drinker, then don’t take more than two drinks per day.
What are the Complications of Erectile Dysfunction?
In general, erectile dysfunction is a sexual health problem which does not cause any other health problems, but if it is left untreated, then it may have a substantial impact on your health. Usually it can cause problems in your relationships. It can decrease self-esteem. It can lead to stress, depression and anxiety.
