About Erythropoietin
Erythropoietin is a hormone that is produced by the kidney and promotes the red blood cell formation by the bone marrow. Normal levels of this hormone range from 4 up to 24 mu/ml (mill units per millimeter). An Abnormal level of this erythropoietin hormone may indicate the bone marrow diseases such as polycythemia or kidney disease.
Erythropoietin is a glycoprotein (Protein attached with sugar) which serve as stimulant for the growth of red blood cells in the bone marrow. An increase in the red blood cells increases the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. Erythropoietin initiates the synthesis of a molecule within red blood cells, known as hemoglobin, which in turn transports oxygen.
Erythropoietin (EPO) Test
Erythropoietin (EPO) test is a test which is performed to detect the Erythropoietin level in the blood. This test requires a routine sample of blood of a person, which is sent to the laboratory for analysis. To perform this test, a patient is asked to fast for about 10 hours (overnight) or sometimes to lie quietly and relax for about 20 to 30 minutes before this test.
Use of Erythropoietin
Erythropoietin is commonly used in people who are suffering from anemia related to kidney dysfunction. Abnormal functioning of kidneys leads to low levels of erythropoietin production, which in turn can lead to low production of red blood cells.
In case of anemia related to kidney disease, erythropoietin can be replaced with an injection of synthetic erythropoietin. Erythropoietin can also be used in anemia caused by chemotherapy, anemia associated with cancer and anemia caused by the dysfunctional bone marrow.
