Interview of Dr. Vikram Chauhan (MD-Ayurveda)
Interviewer: Good Evening Dr. Vikram.
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Good Evening.
Interviewer: Dr. Vikram we request you to tell us about this problem of piles, which is very common these days. So please tell us about the causes and how this disease disturbs the life and what are the treatment options?
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: In Ayurveda it is mentioned that this is a very complicated disorder. It hurts the person like an enemy and it is very painful condition and very troublesome for people who are suffering from piles. Sometimes the bleeding causes too much fear in the person. It seldom causes anaemia but still a patient who sees his own blood going through the toilet feels very much fearful. So it can be bleeding or non bleeding piles. But in case of bleeding piles, a person becomes very fearful. Piles is nothing but it is the veins around the anal canal which become tortuous. They become wavy, let me show you here. We call internal and external piles, two types of piles are there. This is anal canal, suppose this is canal and in this if this is anus and the vein they are here, you can understand it like this, surrounding the canal. If there is too much pressure in the pipe, in the rectum, because of constipation. Constipation is the major reason for the piles because of the straining, because of straining and constipation these veins they become tortuous and wavy and sometimes they bleed and the blood comes out like droplets, so the person becomes very fearful. So these internal piles they are usually not painful but the blood comes out in the form of drops. So that puts lot of fear in person’s mind and sometimes these tortuous veins come out and they may become swollen, and they make thick different position. So these swollen veins become thrombosed. Thrombosed means they can become congested. They are very painful and causes itching. Thrombosed, so they are very painful and itchy. So these external piles they are mainly very symptomatic. Sometimes they can bleed sometimes they don’t bleed, usually the blood comes along with the stool. In this case blood comes along with stool, not drop by drop. So moreover the external piles they are very painful and they are swollen so what is the treatment basically, as I told you, you asked me about the causes also. So major cause is intra-abdominal pressure. When the pressure increases, when there is pressure inside the rectum, and that because of the constipation or may be because of pregnancy, this pressure leads to the tortuosity of the vein and what are the causes of the constipation.
Interviewer: That was the main question.
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Diet and Lifestyle. First of all is diet, eating non- fibrous, when there is no fiber in the food. Packaged food and things like that. burger, pizza and non vegetarian diet, and things like that they are fiber free food, not fiber rich. So consumption of fruits, natural vegetable like apples and papaya, pears and melons, grapes all these things should be consumed in good quantity every day. Oranges also, they are good for preventing the constipation. So constipation should be avoided at all costs. Straining should be avoided. There is one more thing many people what they do they read newspaper on toilet seat.
Interviewer: Yeah! it’s very common these days.
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: So that prolong the time on the toilet seat. So prolong time seating on the toilet seat that leads to straining. Even if you are not putting pressure you are just reading but still its straining. That straining is also very, it’s a big cause for the piles.
Interviewer: Ok. Dr. Vikram what is the treatment basically if someone suffers with this problem? So what are the options available in Ayurveda?
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: In Ayurveda there are so many wonderful options. There are so many ayurvedic medicines, so many ayurvedic herbs. First of all as I told you constipation should be avoided. So cleansers we give, Triphala is wonderful cleanser. Triphala as name suggests three fruits. Triphala. So three fruits as we have in Vara Churna, Vara means the best, so these three fruit powder is full of fiber so Vara Churna is what I use in my practice, as a constipation reliever, and antiseptic, antibiotic, it clears the itching and swelling also, and I use Kanchnaar Guggul, for reducing the swollen pile mass. There is wonderful capsule I use this called Pile Off, there is a herb called Mimosa pudica, if you just touch it, it will shrink. So it helps to shrink the thrombosed veins. That will shrink the pile mass. So pile off capsule I use, Vara Churna I use. Kanchnaar guggul I use. There is Sanjivini vati I use. Sanjivani Vati for clearing the ama, and cleaning the toxins, inside preventing the fermentation. So these are various things I use and for local application I recommend this Nirgundi Oil and Kasisadi oil. These are two oils which even person who is not suffering from piles he can use them. In everyday life one should use some oil like may be sesame, if you don’t have these oils, you can use sesame oil as a preventive but for therapeutic effect for the treatment of this pile, one should use this Nirgundi oil and Kasisadi oil together.
Interviewer: So using these medicines this problem goes away permanently? Like it is a lifestyle disease I think it can come back. But if used these medicines for three to four months can it be treated well?
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Yeah! In many cases it can be cured permanently, because the swollen lymph, the vein not the lymph nodes, swollen veins they can be shrunk permanently. Piles can be cured forever.
Interviewer: So improving lifestyle, taking these medicines.
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: It can be cured not a problem. It can be cured without a problem.
Interviewer: Thank you very much Dr. Vikram for sharing such a nice piece of information.
Dr. Vikram Chauhan: Thank you very much.
