Abstract

Akik Pishti is a classical Ayurvedic formulation derived from purified Akik (Agate stone) under Ratna Pishti in Rasashastra. Agate is a naturally occurring silicate-rich mineral, primarily composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂), which belongs to the quartz family. Agate is formed over millions of years by the deposition of silica in volcanic rocks. Its distinct concentric layers and vibrant colors make it not only a gemstone but also a substance traditionally used for its therapeutic properties. The purification of Akik is an essential step to remove any physical and chemical impurities, ensuring safety and enhancing its medicinal potency. Once purified, it is processed into a fine powder form, increasing its bioavailability and facilitating its therapeutic actions in the body.

Introduction

Akik Pishti is known for its multiple health benefits, especially for the heart, blood, and mind. It works as a cardiotonic, meaning it helps strengthen and support the heart, which can be helpful if someone experiences palpitations or feels their heart is weak or irregular. It also has a hemostatic effect, which means it helps stop or reduce excessive bleeding. Akik Pishti is classified as having Sheeta Virya (cooling potency), which renders it particularly effective in Pitta-dominant conditions. These include inflammatory states, excessive heat in the body, irritability, and bleeding disorders, often linked with aggravated Pitta. In addition, its neuro-cardiac balancing effects contribute to mental calmness, reducing symptoms such as anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia.

Ingredients

  • Dravya (Primary Drug): Akik (Agate)
  • Bhavana Dravya (Adjuvant): Gulab Jal (Rose water)

Description Of Ingredients

1. Akik (Agate)

Akik is a semi-precious stone composed mainly of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and belongs to the quartz family. In Ayurveda, it is classified under Ratnas (gemstones) and is used after proper purification (Shodhana). Therapeutically, it is valued for its cooling (Sheeta Virya), cardiotonic, hemostatic, and neuro-calming effects. Its mineral content contributes to its stabilizing influence on the Pitta dosha.

2. Gulab Jal (Rose Water)

It is obtained from the petals of Rosa damascena, and is used as the Bhavana Dravya (wet grinding medium) in the preparation of Akik Pishti. It possesses cooling, soothing, anti-inflammatory, and mild antimicrobial properties. In this formulation, it enhances the calming and Pitta-pacifying effects of Akik (Agate) while also facilitating the smooth trituration of the mineral into a fine, bioavailable form. Rose water adds both therapeutic value and processing efficacy to the final Pishti.

Method Of Preparation

Purified Akik powder is subjected to Bhavana (wet trituration) using Gulab Jal (rose water), ensuring uniform mixing and grinding in a mortar and pestle for 7 consecutive days.

  • Should be avoided in pregnancy unless prescribed.

Conclusion

Akik Pishti represents a sophisticated Ayurvedic mineral formulation prepared through careful purification and fine processing of Akik stone, turning a natural silicate mineral into a potent, safe, and effective therapeutic agent widely used for cardiovascular and hematological health, as well as mental well-being. Due to its non-toxic nature and compatibility with long-term use (when administered under qualified supervision), Akik Pishti stands out as a safe and effective mineral-based remedy.
