Ayurvedic Treatment of Allergy
About Allergy
Ayurveda relates allergies to over excitability or hypersensitivity of Nervous System. Allergies are more common among people who are hypersensitive, restless, do overwork and are prone to stress. Allergic reactions take place when a person’s immune system is weak. Allergies vary from person to person. As per the principles of Ayurveda, our body has three vital energies. These are the Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Imbalance of either of these individually or in combined form can cause allergies According to Ayurveda, an allergy is the result of a particular substance (the allergen) aggravating a specific. Ayurveda therefore classifies allergies according to doshas: vata, Pitta and Kapha. And yes, it’s possible for more than one dosha to be involved. Most commonly allergic reactions are in accordance to our constitutions. In other words, a pitta-predominant individual is may develop a pitta type of allergy while a kapha-predominant person is more likely to suffer from a kapha type of allergy. This is especially true when our predominant doshas are aggravated. However, it is also possible to develop allergies that do not correlate with our constitutions. For instance, a vata-predominant person with increased pitta, might manifest a purely pitta type of allergy. Whatever the case, let’s start by differentiating the three types of allergies identified in the Ayurvedic tradition.
Vata (if vitiated) is responsible for nasal allergies like continues sneezing and complaints of running nose. Vata types of allergies are often related the digestive tract with symptoms such as burping, bloating, digestive problems, gas, vague abdominal pain. They can also include symptoms like wheezing or headache, as well as sneezing on change of temperature, ringing in the ears, joint pain, sciatica, muscle spasms, insomnia and other vata-type discomforts.
Vata aggravating food to which many people are allergic is Black mah (black lentils).
Pitta (if vitiated) is responsible for allergies like wheat allergy, lactose intolerance, different food allergies, heartburn, hyperacidity, indigestion, stomach upset, nausea, or vomiting and also redness and swelling in the eyes. Pitta-type allergies are also skin related ailments such as hives, rashes, itching, allergic dermatitis, eczema. Pitta-type allergies can also cause hot flashes.
Pitta aggravating food to which many people are allergic is sesame seeds (white til).
Kapha (if vitiated) is responsible for allergies like hay fever, Bronchial asthma.
Kapha allergy symptoms include irritation of the mucus membranes frequent episodes of cold, congestion, cough, sinusitis, water retention, bronchial congestion, and even sleeping disorders. In the digestive tract, kapha types of allergies can create a certain heaviness in the stomach and sluggish digestion. Kapha aggravating food to which many people are allergic is refined flour (Maida).
Ayurveda also specifies there are two categories of allergen reactions. One is the type that a person is born with, caused by genetic predisposition (sahaj diseases). It can also be a reaction to certain foods or to certain allergens in the environment such as dust and pollen grains.
The immune system of our body mainly lymphocytes (type of White blood cells) produces antibodies. Antibodies are the substances that protect us from these foreign invaders that may cause infection. The symptoms of allergy depend on the type of foreign substance to which immune system reacts. They may involve the airways, skin, sinuses and nasal passages as well as the digestive system. The reactions due to some allergens can range from mild to severe. There are also seasonal reactions, or sensitivities that a person has acquired in life.
Precautions to Avoid Allergy
The digestive tract and immune function are so intricately linked, proper food combining can provide essential support by helping to improve digestive health, which in turn, can improve immune health. Ayurveda outlines a number of foods that, while perhaps fine to eat separately, are incompatible with one another. These include things like meat and dairy, milk and yogurt, beans and cheese.
There is a deep connection between digestion and immune function, the digestive fire (jatharagni) after can be a utilized to support the immune system and reduce the chances of development of allergies. When we observe a fast or follow light diet regimen (Langan) our bodies immediately allocate the extra energy to cleaning, rejuvenating the system for optimal performance. A dietary cleanse can help to relieve the digestive system. Cleanses help to clear toxins, balance the doshas and have a stronger digestive fire-all of which will support digestive health, proper immune function, and fewer allergies. Cleanses can be as simple as a half or full-day fast, a juice cleanse, or a simple diet of something like khichri.
