Ashtamrit Parpati – Medicinal Properties, Ingredients, Indications, Dosage & More

Reference : Ras Tantra Saar and Siddha prayog Sangreha

Classical Indication : Grehani

Introduction

Grahani is the bridge between nourishment and vitality. It determines whether food becomes strong or toxic (Ama). Understanding Grahani is understanding the foundation of health itself, because in Ayurveda, balanced digestion is the root from which immunity, energy, and longevity naturally arise. The word “Grahani” means “that which holds,” reflecting its role in retaining food until it is properly processed by Agni, the digestive fire. When Agni burns steadily, Grahani performs with precision, nourishing every tissue. But when Agni becomes weak, irregular, or excessive, the harmony breaks—leading to symptoms like alternating diarrhea and constipation, fatigue, mucus in stool, heaviness, and malabsorption. To manage grahani disorders Ashtamrit parparti plays a vital role. In this write up we will discuss it in detail.

Description Of Ingredients

1. Shuddha Parad (Purified Mercury)

In classical Rasashastra, Shuddha Parad is revered for its catalytic and transformative potential. Properly purified mercury is believed to enhance metabolic precision at both gross and subtle levels. In Grahani Roga, where digestive coordination is disturbed, Parad supports the regulation of impaired Agni and improves the functional integrity of the gastrointestinal tract. Its Yogavahi property helps potentiate the action of associated substances, ensuring deeper tissue penetration and improved assimilation. By stimulating sluggish metabolism while stabilizing erratic digestion, it aids in correcting malabsorption and chronic irregularity, ultimately restoring digestive rhythm and systemic vitality.

2. Loha Bhasma (Iron Calx)

Loha Bhasma is traditionally valued for improving blood quality and enhancing tissue nourishment. Chronic Grahani often results in anemia, fatigue, and poor complexion due to defective absorption. Loha Bhasma supports hemoglobin formation and strengthens Rasa and Rakta Dhatu, compensating for nutritional deficiencies arising from prolonged digestive weakness. It also improves appetite and enhances metabolic efficiency, thereby assisting in better nutrient uptake. By fortifying systemic strength and reducing exhaustion linked to chronic diarrhea or malabsorption, Loha Bhasma plays a restorative role in rebuilding vitality and correcting the long-term consequences of impaired intestinal function.

3. Abhrak Bhasma (Mica Calx)

Abhrak Bhasma is a renowned Rasayana known for its deep rejuvenative capacity. Processed through multiple incinerations, it becomes highly subtle and bio-assimilable. In Grahani Roga, it supports regeneration of weakened intestinal tissues and enhances digestive resilience. Abhrak is traditionally believed to strengthen Agni without aggravating Pitta, making it suitable for chronic digestive instability. It aids in improving stamina, respiratory strength, and overall endurance, which often decline in long-standing digestive disorders. By promoting balanced metabolism and nourishing depleted tissues, Abhrak Bhasma helps restore structural and functional stability to the gastrointestinal system.

4. Tamra Bhasma (Copper Calx)

Tamra Bhasma is known for its action on the liver and spleen, organs closely linked with digestion and metabolism. In Grahani Roga associated with sluggish liver function and Ama accumulation, Tamra supports detoxification and enhances bile secretion. Its scraping (Lekhana) property helps clear metabolic waste and corrects sluggish digestive processes. Tamra also assists in regulating abnormal Kapha accumulation in the gut, reducing heaviness and mucus formation. By stimulating hepatic efficiency and improving fat metabolism, it indirectly strengthens Agni and contributes to more efficient digestion and assimilation.

5. Vanga Bhasma (Tin Calx)

Vanga Bhasma is traditionally associated with strengthening the lower abdominal region and stabilizing intestinal tone. In Grahani, characterized by frequent loose stools and weakness of intestinal walls, Vanga supports firmness and structural integrity. It is also considered beneficial in regulating excessive intestinal secretions and improving absorption. By enhancing digestive stability and reducing chronic debility, Vanga Bhasma aids in restoring functional balance. Its subtle influence on metabolic coordination helps prevent recurrent digestive irregularities and supports long-term maintenance of gut strength.

6. Rajat Bhasma (Silver Calx)

Rajat Bhasma is cooling, stabilizing, and supportive of nervous system balance. Since Grahani often has a psychosomatic component linked with stress and anxiety, Rajat helps calm excessive Vata affecting the gut. It promotes mental composure, which indirectly improves digestive coordination. Rajat is also valued for enhancing immunity and supporting tissue repair. By soothing intestinal irritation and strengthening systemic resistance, it assists in preventing recurrent inflammation and chronic digestive disturbances. Its stabilizing influence contributes to sustained digestive harmony.

7. Jaharmohra Pishti

Jaharmohra Pishti is traditionally used for its cooling and Pitta-pacifying properties. In Grahani cases marked by burning sensation, acidity, or inflammatory tendencies, it provides soothing relief to the gastrointestinal lining. Its mineral-rich composition supports mucosal protection and reduces irritation. Jaharmohra also helps balance excessive internal heat that disrupts digestive consistency. By calming aggravated Pitta and stabilizing intestinal function, it contributes to improved bowel regularity and reduced discomfort, making it valuable in managing inflammatory patterns within Grahani Roga.

8. Shuddha Gandhak (Purified Sulphur)

Shuddha Gandhak is esteemed for its detoxifying and tissue-supportive qualities. In Grahani Roga where Ama and microbial imbalance persist, Gandhak assists in purifying the digestive tract and maintaining a healthy internal environment. It supports metabolic cleansing while encouraging proper digestion. Gandhak also contributes to strengthening immunity and enhancing skin and tissue vitality, which often suffer in chronic digestive disorders. By promoting internal purification and supporting balanced Agni, it plays a complementary role in restoring digestive steadiness and preventing recurrence.

Method Of Preparation

  1. First prepare Kajjali by triturating purified mercury and sulphur.
  2. Then mix the above Bhasmas into it and heat gently on mild fire (traditionally using cow-dung cakes).
  3. When properly melted, spread the material over a banana leaf to form a thin flake preparation (Parpati).

Indications And Clinical Use

  • Ashtamrit Parpati is beneficial in chronic Grahani (malabsorption syndrome). It helps to relieve abdominal pain, vomiting, persistent post-meal discomfort, foul-smelling stools, weakness, emaciation, indigestion, loss of appetite, splenic enlargement, and low-grade fever associated with Grahani disorders.

Dosage

1–3 ratti, three times daily, with honey. It may also be administered with powders of long pepper, clove, Borax, Nutmeg, and cinnamon in equal quantities (4 ratti of Parpati)

Conclusion

In the end, we can say In chronic digestive weakness, where assimilation falters and energy declines, Ashtamrit Parpati supports stability, resilience, and metabolic clarity. It helps reduce Ama, regulate irregular bowels, and rebuild inner strength at a foundational level. More than a formulation, it represents the Ayurvedic philosophy that true healing begins in the gut — where balanced digestion becomes the nectar of renewed health and enduring vitality. Ashtamrit Parpati is a classical jewel of Rasashastra, crafted to rekindle the fading flame of Agni and restore digestive sovereignty. Like a disciplined alchemical symphony, it works subtly within the intestines, strengthening Grahani and refining the process of transformation from food to vitality
