Lohadi Modak – Medicinal Properties, Ingredients, Indications, Dosage & More
Reference : Ras Tantra Saar and Siddha prayog Sangreha
Classical Indication : Arsha (Piles)
Introduction
Piles, known as Arsha in Ayurveda, are swollen and inflamed veins in the rectal or anal region that develop due to chronic constipation, prolonged sitting, straining during defecation, poor dietary habits, and weakened digestion. They may present as pain, itching, burning sensation, bleeding during bowel movements, or a protruding mass. Ayurveda considers piles a disorder of aggravated Vata and Pitta affecting the anal veins, often rooted in impaired Agni (digestive fire). When digestion is disturbed, toxins accumulate and strain the lower channels, leading to venous congestion. Today we will talk about Lohadi modak , a classical formulation which helps in managing Piles naturally without causing any adverse effects. Let’s discuss!

Description Of Ingredients
1. Loha Bhasma (Purified Iron Calx)
Loha Bhasma is a classical herbo-mineral preparation processed through repeated purification and incineration to make iron bio-assimilable. In Ayurveda, it is Rakta-vardhak (improves blood quality), Deepana (enhances digestion), and Balya (strength promoting). In piles, especially bleeding piles, chronic blood loss may lead to weakness and anemia. Loha Bhasma helps restore hemoglobin levels and strengthens tissues. It also improves Agni (digestive fire), thereby correcting constipation, a primary causative factor of Arsha. By improving circulation and tissue tone, it supports healing of inflamed rectal veins.
2. Indrajau (Holarrhena Antidysenterica)
Indrajau is renowned for its Grahi (absorbent) and Stambhana (checking excessive discharge) properties. It balances Pitta and Kapha and is especially effective in conditions involving bleeding and diarrhea. In piles, it helps reduce bleeding, mucous discharge, and inflammation of the rectal mucosa. Its cooling and astringent nature soothes irritated tissues and promotes healing. By regulating bowel movements and reducing intestinal inflammation, Indrajau prevents strain during defecation, thereby reducing pressure on hemorrhoidal veins and helping in both bleeding and non-bleeding piles.
3. Shuddha Bhilava (Semecarpus Anacardium – Purified)
Shuddha Bhilava is a potent Deepana, Pachana, and Lekhana herb used after proper purification to remove its irritant properties. It stimulates digestive fire, removes Ama (toxins), and reduces abnormal tissue growth. In piles, Bhilava helps shrink enlarged hemorrhoidal masses due to its scraping and channel-cleansing action. It improves metabolism and prevents constipation, a major causative factor. Its heating nature balances Kapha-dominant piles and reduces swelling. Properly purified Bhilava enhances circulation and supports regression of pile masses while strengthening digestive power.
4. Chitrakmool Ki Chhal (Plumbago Zeylanica)
Chitrak is a powerful digestive stimulant known for its Deepana and Pachana qualities. It kindles weak digestive fire and eliminates accumulated Ama, which is considered a root cause of Arsha. By improving digestion and metabolism, Chitrak prevents chronic constipation and gas formation. It also has mild anti-inflammatory and channel-clearing properties that help reduce swelling in hemorrhoidal veins. Its heating potency balances Kapha and Vata, which are commonly involved in non-bleeding piles. Regular use under guidance helps reduce pile mass and improve bowel regularity.
5. Belgiri (Aegle Marmelos – Bael Fruit Pulp)
Belgiri is well known for its Grahi (absorbent), Deepana, and mild astringent properties. It regulates bowel movements by reducing excessive looseness while preventing constipation when used properly. In piles, Belgiri helps normalize stool consistency, reducing strain during defecation. Its soothing effect on intestinal mucosa reduces irritation and inflammation. It is especially useful in bleeding piles due to its mild astringent action, which supports hemostasis. By strengthening the digestive system and maintaining proper bowel habits, Belgiri addresses the root cause of hemorrhoids.
6. Vaividang (Embelia Ribes)
Vaividang is traditionally used as a digestive stimulant and mild anthelmintic. It enhances Agni, removes Ama, and clears intestinal channels. In piles, chronic indigestion and toxin accumulation aggravate Vata and Kapha, leading to swelling of anal veins. Vaividang helps correct metabolism and reduces abdominal bloating and heaviness. By supporting proper digestion and detoxification, it prevents constipation and straining. Its scraping nature also assists in reducing excessive tissue growth associated with pile masses, thereby contributing to long-term management.
7. Harad (Terminalia Chebula)
Harad is called the “King of Medicines” in Ayurveda due to its tridosha-balancing nature. It is a mild laxative, digestive, and rejuvenative herb. In piles, Harad is particularly valuable because it relieves constipation without causing irritation. It promotes smooth bowel evacuation, reducing pressure on hemorrhoidal veins. Its anti-inflammatory and healing properties help soothe rectal tissues and reduce swelling. Harad also improves metabolism and prevents recurrence by correcting the underlying digestive imbalance. It is beneficial in both bleeding and non-bleeding types of Arsha.
8. Sonth (Zingiber Officinale)
Sonth is a potent digestive and carminative herb with Deepana and Pachana actions. It enhances digestive fire, reduces gas, and relieves abdominal heaviness. In piles, impaired digestion and chronic constipation aggravate symptoms. Sonth improves bowel motility and reduces straining during defecation. Its anti-inflammatory and circulation-enhancing properties help decrease swelling in hemorrhoidal veins. By balancing Vata and Kapha, it supports reduction of pain and discomfort associated with non-bleeding piles and promotes better digestion overall.
9. Guda (Jaggery)
Guda acts as a natural binding and rejuvenating agent in formulations. It has mild laxative properties that help soften stools and promote smooth bowel movements. In piles, hard stools and straining worsen symptoms; jaggery helps prevent this. It also supports digestion and provides gentle nourishment, counteracting weakness from chronic bleeding. Additionally, Guda enhances palatability and improves the synergistic action of other herbs. By maintaining regular bowel habits and supporting strength, it plays an important supportive role in managing Arsha.

Conclusion
In conclusion, piles are not merely a local problem but a reflection of deeper digestive imbalance and lifestyle errors. When bowel habits are irregular and Agni remains weak, persistent strain damages the delicate rectal veins. Effective management therefore requires more than symptomatic relief—it demands correction of digestion, regulation of stools, and adoption of healthy dietary and daily practices. Ayurvedic principles emphasize strengthening Agni, reducing inflammation, and supporting venous tone to prevent recurrence. With timely care and use of this classical formulation piles can be managed successfully and long-term comfort can be restored naturally.
