Melagen Oil – Key Ingredients, Their Benefits, Indications & Usage
Introduction
Melagen Oil is a patent formulation by Planet Ayurveda, used in several skin disorders. As the name suggests, Melagen Oil regulates melanin in our skin. So, what exactly is melanin? Melanin is a natural polymer derived from the amino acid tyrosine. It occurs in different amounts within the skin, playing a key role in determining the distinct color of the eyes, hair, and skin. Regular external application of this oil is believed to stimulate melanocyte activity, promote natural pigmentation, and maintain the overall integrity of the skin. By combining ancient wisdom with modern quality standards, Melagen Oil offers a safe and herbal alternative in the management of chronic skin pigmentation disorders. Remember, this oil is only for local/external application and should not be consumed orally.
Ingredients
Melagen Oil is made from the following ingredients. They are as follows-
- Stri Kutaja
- Bakuchi
- Coconut Oil
- Manjishtha
- Neem
Description of Ingredients
1. Stri Kutaja
Its Latin name is Wrightia tinctoria and it is commonly known as Pala Indigo and Sweet Indrajao. It pacifies Pitta and Kapha doshas. Leaves of Stri Kutaja (Wrightia tinctoria) contain triterpenoid compounds, including Cycloartenol, Cycloeucalenol, β-Amyrin, and β-Sitosterol, which are considered its major active constituents. These protect melanocytes from oxidative stress and modulate tyrosinase activity, thereby preventing excess pigmentation. It further balances melanin synthesis by suppressing pathways like MITF, ensuring even skin tone.
2. Bakuchi
The Latin name for Bakuchi is Psoralia corylifolia. Its trade name is Babchi. Its seeds, roots and leaves are generally used to treat various skin conditions. Active constituents present in this herb are Bakuchiol, Psoralen, Isopsoralen, Corylifolin, and some volatile oils. It is Katu (Pungent) and Tikta (Bitter) in Rasa (Taste), pacifies Vata and Kapha dosha, and is Kushthaghana (Curing skin disorders) in action. Bakuchi is considered a Rasayana (Rejuvenator) for skin health, restoring complexion, improving pigmentation, and controlling recurrence of chronic skin disorders.
3. Coconut Oil
Commonly called Coconut Palm, its Latin name is Cocos nucifera. Coconut oil is extracted from mature coconuts, not the tender ones. Pacifying Pitta and Vata doshas, matured coconuts are rich in high levels of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) in the fat, along with beneficial phenolic compounds and phytohormones like cytokinins and gibberellins. It acts as a natural emollient and helps maintain hydration and promote barrier repair. It also has an antioxidant & anti-inflammatory effect on skin, along with stimulating collagen in skin tissue. Its anti-microbial action makes it extremely beneficial in skin conditions like fungal infections, acne, and eczema. These phytohormones reduce scars, enhance elasticity, and delay photoaging.
4. Manjishtha
Often called Manjeeth or Indian Madder, its Latin name is Rubia cordifolia. It balances Pitta and Kapha dosha and its roots are rich in bioactive constituents, mainly anthraquinones like munjistin, purpurin, rubiadin, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, and terpenoids. It helps in Raktashodhan (Blood purification), so it naturally is beneficial in various Kushtha Rogas (Skin diseases). Moreover, it has strong antioxidant and UV-protective properties, promotes detoxification at the cellular level, and helps in removal of excess oil, dirt, and microbes from the skin. Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia) accelerates skin repair, making it useful in scars, ulcers, and chronic skin conditions.
5. Neem
Commonly seen almost everywhere in India, Nimba/Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves possess several active compounds like Azadirachtin, Nimbin, Nimbidin, Nimbosterol, and ß-sitosterol, among many others. It pacifies Pitta and Kapha dosha. It is extremely beneficial in Raktavikara (Blood-related disorders) and also in combating inflammation in skin.
