Mustadi Yoga – Medicinal Properties, Ingredients, Indications, Dosage & More

Introduction

Mustadi Yoga is a powerhouse of Ayurvedic clinical pharmacology, specifically engineered to eliminate Krimi (parasitic infestations). This herbo-mineral formulation follows a sophisticated “attack and detox” strategy. Potent vermicides like Vidanga, Kapila, and Palash directly neutralize parasites, while the catalytic Kajjali (Mercury-Sulfur complex) ensures deep tissue penetration to reach hidden larvae. Simultaneously, digestive stimulants like Musta and Hing rekindle the metabolic fire (Agni), drying up the damp, toxic mucus (Ama) that sustains worms. By combining these with the enzyme-rich juice of Pineapple, the formula dissolves the parasites’ protective coatings, restoring gut integrity and systemic health. Let’s discuss this formulation in detail!

Description Of Ingredients

1. Purified Mercury (Shuddha Parada)

In Ayurveda, purified mercury is considered a “Yogavahi,” meaning it enhances the potency of the herbs it is mixed with. When processed into Kajjali (with sulfur), it acts as a powerful internal antiseptic and catalyst. It helps penetrate deep into the intestinal tissues to dislodge stubborn parasites and neutralize the toxins (Ama) produced by them, ensuring a comprehensive cleansing of the digestive tract.

2. Purified Sulfur (Shuddha Gandhaka)

Sulfur is a well-known antifungal and antimicrobial agent. In this formulation, it works alongside mercury to create a hostile environment for worms. Its “Kushthagna” (skin-treating) and “Krimighna” (worm-killing) properties help eliminate the eggs and larvae of parasites. It also aids in purifying the blood, which is often contaminated by the metabolic waste of intestinal worms, thereby reducing systemic itching.

3. Nagarmotha (Cyperus rotundus)

Nagarmotha is a potent digestive stimulant (Deepana) and carminative (Pachana). It helps by drying up the excess mucus and moisture (Kleda) in the intestines, which serves as a breeding ground for worms. By improving digestion and absorbing excess liquid, it starves the parasites of their habitat. It also relieves the abdominal pain and bloating frequently associated with heavy worm infestations.

4. Roasted Palash Seeds (Butea monosperma)

Palash seeds are specifically renowned in Ayurvedic medicine as “Krimighna” (anthelmintic). They contain palasonin, which is highly effective against roundworms and tapeworms. Roasting the seeds makes them easier to digest and reduces their toxicity. They work by paralyzing the worms, allowing them to be easily expelled from the body during bowel movements without causing significant irritation to the intestinal lining.

5. Vidanga Pulp (Embelia ribes)

Vidanga is arguably the most important Ayurvedic herb for treating worms. It contains embelin, which possesses significant anthelmintic activity. It works against a wide variety of parasites, including ringworms and threadworms. Beyond just killing the worms, Vidanga improves the “Agni” (digestive fire), preventing the recurrence of infestations by ensuring that the gut environment remains healthy and resistant to foreign pathogens.

6. Pomegranate Bark/Flowers (Punica granatum)

The bark and flowers of the pomegranate tree contain alkaloids like pelletierine, which are highly toxic to intestinal parasites, especially tapeworms. These compounds cause the worms to lose their grip on the intestinal walls. Additionally, the astringent nature of the bark helps heal the micro-injuries and inflammation in the gut lining caused by the hooks and suckers of the parasites.

7. Roasted Thorny Karanja (Pongamia pinnata)

Karanja kernels possess strong bitter and pungent properties that act as a natural vermifuge. The roasting process enhances their therapeutic profile for internal use. Karanja is particularly effective in treating “Kaphaja Krimi” (worms born from phlegm/mucus). It also helps in managing the skin eruptions and chronic itching that often manifest as a secondary symptom of long-term internal parasitic infections.

8. Roasted Indrajau (Holarrhena antidysenterica)

Commonly used for dysentery, Indrajau is excellent for clearing the gut of pathogenic microbes and worms. It has a cooling yet drying effect on the intestines. By correcting the movement of Vata in the lower abdomen, it helps relieve the “Udarpida” (stomach ache) and “Anaha” (distension) caused by the physical presence of worms and the gas they produce.

9. Kapila (Mallotus philippensis)

Kapila is a powerful purgative and anthelmintic. It is traditionally used to expel tapeworms and flukes. Its unique action involves both killing the parasites and then stimulating the intestines to flush them out quickly. This prevents the dead or dying worms from decaying inside the body and releasing further toxins into the bloodstream, which could otherwise lead to fever or nausea.

10. Kirmani Ajwain (Artemisia maritima)

Unlike common Ajwain, Kirmani Ajwain contains santonin, a potent compound specifically used to expel roundworms from the small intestine. It acts by stimulating the muscular activity of the worms, causing them to move toward the large intestine where they can be excreted. It is highly effective for pediatric worm cases and helps reduce the “Ubak” (nausea) associated with infestations.

11. Ajwain Satva (Thymol)

Thymol, the concentrated essence of Ajwain, is a powerful antimicrobial and antispasmodic. It works by disrupting the cell membranes of the parasites and neutralizing the gas-producing bacteria that often coexist with worms. It provides immediate relief from cramping and colic. Its strong aromatic nature also helps in stimulating gastric juices, ensuring that the other herbal ingredients are absorbed effectively.

12. Roasted Asafoetida (Hing)

Hing is a staple for treating “Vata” disorders in the gut. In the context of worms, it acts as a potent digestive stimulant that breaks down the protective biofilm or mucus layers parasites hide under. Its strong pungent odor and chemical composition are repellent to most intestinal worms. Roasting it in ghee or heat removes its rawness, making it a soothing agent for the intestinal walls.

13. Pineapple Juice (Ananas comosus)

The juice of pineapple (specifically the leaves used in the preparation) contains bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme. This enzyme literally digests the protein-based “skin” or cuticle of the worms, weakening them significantly. Using it as a grinding medium (Bhavana) ensures that the medicinal tablets are infused with these enzymes, making the entire formulation much more aggressive toward the physical structure of the parasites.

Method Of Preparation

  • Prepare a Kajjali (fine black powder) by grinding the purified Mercury and Sulfur together. Then, mix in the finely sifted (kapad-chhan) powder of the other ingredients.
  • Grind this mixture with the juice of pineapple leaves for one full day. Form the mixture into tablets weighing 2 Ratti each and dry them in the shade.

Uses And Benefits (Upayog)

  • Worm Infestation: Consuming this formulation for 7 to 21 days eliminates intestinal worms (Udrakrimi) and the complications arising from them.
  • Digestive Symptoms: When stomach disorders lead to worms, symptoms such as loss of appetite, indigestion, vomiting, mild fever, bloating, abdominal pain, hiccups, and anemia (Panduta) appear. This medicine destroys the worms and improves digestion.
  • General Health: It is beneficial when liver or intestinal weakness leads to various types of worms causing extreme fatigue, cold, cough, abdominal pain, gas, heaviness, constipation, intermittent diarrhea, nausea, persistent mild fever, and itching in the nose, anus, or across the whole body. It also addresses blood-purpura spots (similar to hives).

Dosage

Take 2 to 4 tablets, twice a day, with the following decoction (Kwath).

Vehicle (Anupana)

Mix equal parts of the following 14 ingredients: Nagarmotha, Musakani, Palash seeds, Vidanga, Pomegranate tree bark, Ajwain, Kirmani Ajwain, Betel nut (Supari), Devdaru, Sahjan (Suonjana) bark, Harad, Baheda, Amla, and Indrajau.

Preparation

Make a coarse powder (Jaukoot) of these. Take 1 Tola of this powder and boil it in 16 Tolas of water until it is reduced to one-fourth (4 Tolas). Administer this decoction with the tablets.

Conclusion

At last we can say that Mustadi Yoga represents a pinnacle of traditional Ayurvedic toxicology, meticulously designed to do more than simply expel parasites. By integrating the enzymatic breakdown of Pineapple, the rapid vermicidal action of Vidanga, and the deep-seated catalytic power of Kajjali, it ensures the complete neutralization of both mature worms and their hidden larvae. This formulation effectively resets the intestinal environment, drying up the damp, toxic mucus (Ama) that invites reinfection. Through this multi-layered approach, the remedy not only clears the gut but also resolves systemic complications like chronic itching and anemia, ultimately restoring the body’s fundamental metabolic resilience.
