Pippali Ghrita – Medicinal Properties, Ingredients, Indications, Dosage & More

Introduction

Pippali Ghrita is a classical Ayurvedic medicated ghee formulation primarily indicated in Kshaya (emaciation, wasting disorders) and Kasa (chronic cough). It is a simple yet highly effective formulation prepared using Pippali (Piper longum — Long pepper), Guda (jaggery), Chaga Ghrita (goat ghee), and Chaga Kshira (goat milk).

This formulation is especially valued for its ability to enhance Agni (digestive fire), nourish depleted tissues (Dhatu Kshaya), and strengthen the respiratory system. Due to the presence of Pippali (Piper longum), it acts as a potent Rasayana (rejuvenator) for the lungs, improving both digestion and respiratory health simultaneously.

Composition

Ingredients

  1. Pippali Kalka (Piper longum — Long pepper paste) — 1/2 part
  2. Guda (Jaggery — Saccharum officinarum product) — 1/2 part
  3. Chaga Ghrita (Goat ghee) — 4 parts
  4. Chaga Kshira (Goat milk) — 16 parts

Method Of Preparation

All the ingredients are taken in the specified proportions and mixed thoroughly in a clean vessel. The mixture is subjected to mild heating following classical Sneha Paka Vidhi (medicated ghee preparation process). It is cooked with continuous stirring until the liquid portion evaporates completely and only the medicated ghrita remains in the quantity of Chaga Ghrita (Goat ghee). After achieving proper Sneha Siddhi Lakshanas (signs of completion of medicated ghee formation), the preparation is filtered while warm and stored in clean, wide-mouthed glass containers.

Therapeutic Properties

Pippali (Piper longum) is the प्रमुख ingredient known for its Deepana (appetising), Pachana (digestive), and Rasayana (rejuvenating) properties. It enhances bioavailability (Yogavahi effect) and strengthens respiratory function. Guda (jaggery) provides nourishment and supports energy restoration, while also aiding in mild detoxification. Chaga Kshira (goat milk) is easily digestible and acts as a nourishing medium, especially beneficial in debilitated conditions. Chaga Ghrita (goat ghee) enhances tissue replenishment and acts as a carrier, ensuring deeper delivery of therapeutic components. Together, these ingredients help restore weakened Dhatus (body tissues), improve appetite, and reduce chronic cough.

Precautions

  • Should be used under medical supervision
  • Use cautiously in individuals with high Pitta or hyperacidity
  • Avoid in acute febrile conditions with strong Ama presence
  • Monitor for digestive tolerance

Commentary

This formulation is described in classical texts such as Cakradatta (Rajayakshma Chikitsa 10:64) and Bhaishajya Ratnavali (Rajayakshma Chikitsa 14:237), indicating its significance in managing chronic respiratory and wasting disorders.

Conclusion

Pippali Ghrita is a simple yet powerful Ayurvedic formulation that effectively addresses Kshaya (wasting) and Kasa (cough) by improving digestion, nourishing tissues, and strengthening the respiratory system. Its balanced combination of Deepana (digestive) and Brimhana (strengthening) properties makes it particularly useful in chronic debilitating conditions. When used appropriately, it helps restore vitality, enhance immunity, and promote overall health.
