Punkintoladi Ghrita – Medicinal Properties, Ingredients, Indications, Dosage & More
Introduction
Punkintoladi Ghrita is a classical Ayurvedic medicated ghee formulation primarily indicated in Raktatisara (bloody diarrhea), Pravahika (dysentery), Arshas (hemorrhoids), and Grahani Roga (malabsorption syndrome). This formulation is rich in Grahi (absorbent), Deepana (digestive stimulant), and Stambhana (hemostatic) herbs that help control excessive bowel movements, reduce intestinal inflammation, and restore digestive strength. Prepared using Karanja Tvak (Pongamia pinnata — Indian beech bark) and Changeri (Oxalis corniculata — Indian sorrel) along with potent herbal paste ingredients, it acts directly on the gastrointestinal tract to arrest bleeding, improve digestion, and stabilize bowel function.

II. Ghrita Dravya
- Murchita Goghrita (Processed Cow’s Ghee) — 160 ml
III. Kalka Dravyas (Herbal Paste Ingredients)
- Jatiphala (Myristica fragrans — Nutmeg) — 5 gm
- Jatipatra (Myristica fragrans — Mace) — 5 gm
- Bhringaraja (Eclipta alba — False daisy) — 5 gm
- Ahiphena (Purified opium latex — Papaver somniferum) — 5 gm
- Kutaja Bija (Holarrhena antidysenterica — Kurchi seeds) — 5 gm
- Ativisha (Aconitum heterophyllum — Indian aconite) — 5 gm
- Ajamoda (Apium graveolens — Celery seeds) — 5 gm
- Shambuka Mamsa (Snail meat) — 5 gm
Method Of Preparation
First, the Kalka Dravyas are finely processed into a smooth paste. This kalka is mixed thoroughly with Murchita Goghrita (processed cow’s ghee) in a clean stainless steel vessel. Then, the Drava Dravyas (Karanja Tvak Svarasa and Cangeri Svarasa) are added to the mixture. The entire preparation is heated on mild fire following classical Sneha Paka Vidhi (medicated ghee preparation process) with continuous stirring. The process is continued until the aqueous portion evaporates and only the medicated ghrita remains in its original quantity. After achieving proper Sneha Siddhi Lakshanas (signs of completion of medicated ghee formation), the ghrita is filtered and stored in clean, wide-mouthed glass containers.

Jatiphala and Jatipatra (Myristica fragrans) provide strong Stambhana action, helping to reduce excessive bowel movements. Ativisha (Aconitum heterophyllum) improves digestion and controls pediatric as well as chronic diarrhea. Bhringaraja (Eclipta alba) supports liver function and aids in detoxification. Ahiphena (Papaver somniferum) contributes potent anti-diarrheal and analgesic effects. Changeri (Oxalis corniculata) enhances digestion and reduces intestinal inflammation. Goghrita acts as a soothing and nourishing base, promoting healing of intestinal mucosa and enhancing drug delivery.
Precautions
- Should be used strictly under medical supervision
- Use cautiously due to presence of Ahiphena (opium derivative)
- Avoid in pregnancy and children without guidance
- Monitor for constipation or excessive dryness

Punkintoladi Ghrita is a highly effective classical Ayurvedic formulation for managing Raktatisara (bloody diarrhea), Pravahika (dysentery), Arshas (Piles), and Grahani (malabsorption syndrome) disorders. Its unique combination of Grahi (absorbs excess fluid and controls diarrhea), Stambhana (arrests bleeding), and Deepana (digestive) herbs helps control diarrhea, reduce bleeding, and restore digestive balance.
