Fever is not merely a rise in body temperature, In Ayurveda, Jvara is seen as a profound disturbance that shakes the harmony of body, mind, and inner vitality. Ancient seers described fever as the first affliction of humankind, for it weakens strength, clouds clarity, and dims the digestive fire that sustains life. When Agni falters and Āma accumulates, the Doṣhas lose balance and fever takes hold. Ayurveda listens to this disturbance with sensitivity, viewing fever as the body’s cry for correction. Its approach honors the intelligence of nature, seeking to restore balance rather than silence symptoms. Today we will talk about Swachhandbhairavras in detail and see how it helps in managing fever.
Ingredients
- Purified Mercury (ShuddhaPārada) — 4 tola

Description of Ingredients
1. Purified Mercury (ShuddhaPārada)
ShuddhaPārada acts as a potent Yogavāhī, enhancing the efficacy of associated ingredients and ensuring rapid action in fever. It balances all three doṣas when properly processed and helps break the pathogenesis of sannipātika and viṣamajvara. Its subtle and penetrating nature supports swift normalization of agni and removes āma from deeper tissues.
2. Purified Vatsanābha (ShuddhaVatsanābha)
ShuddhaVatsanābha possesses strong Uṣṇavīrya and Tikṣṇaguṇa, making it effective in acute and severe fevers marked by chills, pain, and collapse. It pacifies aggravated Vāta and Kapha, stimulates agni, and counters āma-induced obstruction. Classical texts describe its use in pralāpaka and sannipātikajvara under strict purification.
3. Purified Sulfur (ShuddhaGandhaka)
ShuddhaGandhaka supports fever management by enhancing dīpana and pācana, thereby digesting āma that sustains fever. It improves circulation at the micro level and stabilizes metabolic activity. Its Rasāyana-like action helps prevent recurrence and supports recovery during prolonged or recurrent fevers.
4. Nutmeg (Jāyaphala)
Jāyaphala exhibits Uṣṇavīrya and Grahi properties, helping control excessive sweating, restlessness, and gastrointestinal disturbance seen in fevers. It pacifies Vāta and Kapha, calms the nervous system, and supports better sleep, which aids recovery in delirious or exhausting febrile states.
5. Long Pepper Powder (PippalīCūrṇa)
Pippalī acts as a powerful Dīpana–Pācana herb that rekindles jatharagni and clears āma, a key factor in jvara. It pacifies Vāta and Kapha, enhances bioavailability of the formulation, and supports respiratory comfort. Classical Ayurveda values it in chronic, recurrent, and āma-dominant fevers.
Method of Preparation
- First, prepare Kajjali by triturating purified mercury and purified sulfur, then mix purified Vatsanabha into it.
- After this, add Nutmeg and Long Pepper one by one and triturate the mixture with the juice of Droṇapuṣpī for one day. Prepare pills of 1–1 ratti each.
Indications And Clinical Use
- By the use of this Ras, cold-type fever (ŚītaJvara), intermittent fever, malarial fever (Viṣūcikā), irregular fever (ViṣamaJvara), fever with cough, relapsing fever, digestive disorders, loss of appetite, vomiting, and Chronic headache are alleviated. During administration of this Ras rice gruel or curd-rice is given according to the Niramalakshan (NO Toxins buildup) of the patient.
- This Ras is Jvaraghna (antipyretic), Krimighna (antimicrobial), Āmapācaka (digestive of toxins), Agnidīpaka (enhancer of digestive fire), mildly Grahī (absorbent) and Kapha-śāmaka. Due to its properties, it destroys many diseases.
- It is especially useful in fevers arising from indigestion, where symptoms such as 2–4 episodes of loose stools, stickiness in the mouth, lethargy, headache, and nausea, loss of taste, relapsing fever, and joint pains are present. In acute indigestion-induced fever, administering this Ras with ginger juice provides immediate relief.
- When given with Droṇapuṣpī juice, it cures cold-associated fever, alternating chills and fever, and various types of intermittent fevers, including daily, tertian, and quartan fevers.
- In fevers with chills, if the medicine is administered two hours apart, three times before the onset of fever, and the patient avoids bathing and food, the fever subsides. Water should be boiled, cooled, and then consumed. If excessive hunger arises, milk or tea may be given. Intake of sugar, jaggery, and curd should be minimized.
- In the rainy or winter season, exposure to cold wind, and in summer, excessive exposure to sunlight causes relapsing fever; in such conditions, administering this Ras with betel leaf juice is beneficial. If after administering this Ras, black pepper powder is added to boiled Nivāya milk and given, and the patient is covered with cloth and made to sit or lie down, profuse sweating occurs, toxins are expelled, and relapsing fever is relieved.
- In digestive-origin Viṣūcikā (severe gastro-intestinal disorder), this Ras shows excellent efficacy when administered with onion juice and lemon juice. Until the disease subsides and appetite returns properly, no food should be given.
Dosage
1 to 2 ratti, administered twice daily, with betel leaf, ginger juice, or Droṇapuṣpī juice.

At last it can be concluded that the Ayurvedic approach to fever is guided by compassion, precision, and deep respect for the body’s innate intelligence. Instead of suppressing fever abruptly, classical management aims to rekindle Agni, dissolve Āma, and stabilize disturbed Doṣas.
